How do you cut those f-holes?

Having built a handful of CBGs, a biscuit tin or two (depending on how broad-minded you are), and currently working on my second LPG, I was today pondering the advice of a friend, who said that,…Continue

No, seriously, what are you playing?

There are, I'm guessing, thousands of you out there. You're clearly not all from south of the Mason/Dixon- this spirited venture would appear to encompass the whole of N America and Europe. So- we…Continue

"Dashed funny you should say that, Uncle- finished the two 18" scale pieces, and the first is a dream- intonation spot on, tunes clean even though there's some heavy improv string-tree stuff going on. Could have sworn the second one would…"

"Both nice.  Righty is quite pleasing.  Little gits are comfy, but it is hard for me to get the frets spot on for very good intonation."

I should share this, because much of it was shared with me- and it has helped me enormously. I've been building these things for less than a year, and I now find that each new instrument I finish plays like a real guitar. For the love of Gitty, some of them may even be saleable... Anyway, here goes.I was initially shy of showing my builds to my friend S. Not only is she a skilled carpenter and fully qualified boatbuilder, she does not suffer fools gladly either. But she was really taken with…See More

More from the A4 plywood series. Both 35mm necks, 22" scale- #12 has a piezo and a 1/8" top while #13 is acoustic with a 1/16" top. Note the real Rory the Border in the background! Currently working on two A5 bodies with 30mm necks, 18" scale- they…

I may have been quiet, but I've not been idle. Three builds since Xmas, steadily ironing out the mistakes. Frets don't fit snugly? Buy a proper fret-slotting saw. Intonation totally rubbish? Lower the nut. Stuck for gift ideas? Build another lap steel (from wood). Really starting to enjoy this game!

One day last summer I was driving down the hill to the local market town for bits and pieces. Saw a 'bike down in the middle of the road, so stopped and asked the chap in black leathers if he was OK. When he turned I could see he was my age-ish- late 50s, grey beard, that sort of thing. "Fine" he said, "only had this thing a couple of days", so I drove on. Got to town, parked, and burst out laughing. My wife, I thought, is luckier than she knows. There was a chap who may not have ridden a…
