Features & Building Tips

We just added eight new "How to Play" videos to continue our 2017 Free Lessons Series!

We've got better cameras, better closeups... and much better lessons!

A note from Shane:
The free access of lessons and guitar plans is the backbone of Cigar Box Nation.  We've been giving away this content since the early days when all this was just a Yahoo chat room.  It's the #1 reason why the humble cigar box guitar is experiencing a worldwide renaissance.

Recently, I was gifted with a cutting edge video camera by our sponsor, C. B. Gitty Crafter Supply, replacing my lackluster cell phone videos.  All they asked was that I create more lessons.  I want to personally thank them here.

Today, I invite you to see eight new how-to play video lessons.  I've been taking your requests on Facebook and have a running list.  (Is there a lesson you'd like me to teach?  Email it to me at shanespeal@yahoo.com).

Stay primal!
-Shane Speal

WE'VE GOT THE BLUES!  Three new lessons on Blues!
Playing Slide Blues: THE BASICS
Start here!
Shane shows a basic blues riff and how to get it chugging with a 3-string cigar box guitar.
This is also the same riff used by Son House, RL Burnside and others.
Push your cigar box guitar into the classy side of the blues with this cool lesson.

Featured Instrument: License Plate Resonator Guitar by Milt Haselmire
This fantastic electric reso was handmade by Milt Haselmire of North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada.  We're in love with the design, color combinations and overall look.  Wow!

See all of Milt's photos here.  Do you have a license plate guitar of your own?  Post photos on the Cigar Box Nation Photos Page!  Just click the +Add button.

Use This Riff to Sell More Cigar Box Guitars at Your Vending Booth: Shane's lesson for sellers!
One of the most useful lessons for cigar box guitar sellers who are looking for the ultimate riff that will draw people to their booth.  Speal shows how to use a simple G major scale on a three-string slide CBG and a Roland MicroCube amp to craft lush, heavenly sounds that bring people in.

Break Away From Open G: We've got new tunings!

Shane Speal has been championing this tuning for years and has written several songs with it.
Featuring Shane Speal's twangy Hendrix cover, "I Don't Live Today" played in Open C tuning (CGC) cigar box guitar.

And Now For Something Completely Different...

Years ago, Shane Speal created a video on cigar box guitar tunings that mentioned a G6 Hawaiian tuning.  Well, he's back with a much improved version of G6 for 3-string.
It's the percussion technique that Johnny Cash made popular in songs like "I Walk the Line."
