Hello Guys...I'm Bob Cianci, guitarist, drummer and music journalist. I write for Premier Guitar magazine, and am going to be doing a story on CBG's for an upcoming issue, perhaps as early as July. I have spoken extensively to Shane and Ted Crocker, and will be picking their brains for stuff I can use in the article. Both of them have been very helpful. I will be heading out to Shane's place on 5/16 to do an interview, see his collection, and build a CBG with him. I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can about CBGs, the history, the music, and especially you guys-the cult of the CBG.

Welcome Bob.

Just don't build one... then you will be assimilated... or at least addicted. :o)
I can just see the headline;

"Music journo taken by 'The Nation'"

Welcome Bob!
Welcome. Maybe as a journalist you could start up a magazine about home built musical instruments. I've often wished ther was a magazine like that, not on just CBG's but all types, like harps, NA flutes, tongue drums, clear up to pipe organs...
Thank you for the welcomes. Maybe "Cult" is the incorrect word. I can see how it has a bad connotation to some people, but I like the fact that you guys are so passionate about this simple, homemade instrument and its history and usefulness. You really are a cult in the good sense of the word.

One of the angles I'm going to use in my article is the way in which many of us guitarists can get hung up on acquiring and playing high-end, high-dollar instruments, that we forget how nice it can be to play something that is inexpensive, yet great in its own way. I'm looking right now for a cheesy Teisco or Kingston Japanese electric for slide playing. Sure, I could afford to buy something more expensive, but why? I'd rather spend $100-150 and play something really funky, authentic and raw than a $1000 Gibson.
Welcome Bob! I see you are searching for a cheesy '60s Japanese made axe. I got bitten by that bug a while back as well as a fever for Sears distributed Silvertones. Good luck with the search. And if you are like me (and everyone here)....cigar box guitars will bite ya as well.
Hey Bob! Welcome to The Family.

I think the term "cult" works just fine. I turned 40 this spring, and my wife made me a CBG-shaped birthday cake, which I found not at all ironic.

A couple of months ago, we were listening to a piano player, and she leaned over and whispered to me "I bet this would sound better on a cigar box piano."

Apparently I talk about Cigar Box Guitars pretty frequently.
If you are looking for something to play slide on, a CBG is the way to go!!
Iggy...I understand what you're saying, and that's what I intend to do with the cbg for Delta stuff, but I also need something for use with my band in terms of electric slide, so a Kingston or Teisco is perfect for that application.
Get Shane to play some Jug Fusion tunes for you if you think you need six strings to play with your band, lol.

I took my 3 string cigar box bass to a blues jam the other night and really wowed them, playing in a pick up blues band. Only problem was, the players who go to blues jams apparently don't know any blues older than about 1970 so I got a lot of blank looks when I called for "Back Door Man".

You're right about that. I stopped going to blues jams, because there were too many guys trying to be the next Stevie Ray. Maybe I should give them a try again. I used to belong to a blues society here in northwest NJ that had monthly meetings that were more or less an excuse to have a blues jam in a bar. They were always hit & miss, because you never knew who was going to show up, but they were usually fun. Most of the time, I played drums, and sometimes, I was the only drummer there, so they wanted me to play with everyone! One time, the host band's drummer was very weird about anybody playing his drums. I mean, if you agree as a band to host a blues jam, you expect people to play your drums, right? This guy was a turkey.
