Hi,

I had to cut down a cherry tree that had some internal damage...

I have salvaged several logs and have cut one into some boards..

Right now I have 2" thick by around 29" long.  I usually make necks out of 36" long lumber.

any thoughts on using 29" and shorter?  No rush as I figure about 8 months to dry the lumber anyway...

I was able to get 4 nice slabs from this one log... got to go and cut more trees...

You could look to other ways to build than a neck thru guitar. Heel mounted at the front of the box, etc.
Don
Like Don says, do a bolt on neck and save about 7-8 inches of neck length. I made a few bolt on CBGs myself. I glued a heavy duty cross member to the bottom of the box, and attached the neck and tail piece to the cross member. An added benefit is that you can adjust the action somewhat by putting shims under the neck where it joins the cross member.
home cut Cherry sounds nice but as a rule to "Air Dry" Hardwood it takes 12 months per inch thickness so that's 2 years - and thats with the End of the Boards dipped in wax to stop the wood drying too fast and splitting down the grain

29" is more than enough for a bolt on neck and theres loads of ways to do them ..enjoy
juju :)
And you can scarf join on a head cut from another piece.
Now that is interesting... I am liking the tree branch. Now I have to go and build a kiln....
