Hmm Whats a diatonic scale? simply pit it is the basic singing scale you learned as a child,, do re me fa so la ti & then returns to do..
there web sites that will allow you to calculate the fret position on any neck length you chose to use ant those are always calculated from the nut (normally the closest end to you tuners) and the bridge what they tell you is the mathematical spacing between the frets.
If you really want to get creative hide the tuning keys.

I would very much like to understand pretty much all there is to know about scale lengths, neck widths, fret distances, etc. and so on, I am new to building box guitars and have come to the conclusion that without this knowledge I will be limiting myself and the quality of my instruments, where to start??? let see...Whats a diatonic scale? such as a dulcimer and a strum stick supposedly use...(explain as you would to a child, hence me...lol)

Depends how your rules and gauges are set up.  Except for my tapes, most of mine are decimal.  So are my calculators, except the fractional Project-Calc I bought at Home Depot, which rounds up any fraction less than 1/32" (save your money).

Papa, I just typed the length into my google search box and got

(24 5/8) inches = 62.5475 centimeters

can anyone help me convert 24 5/8 inches to mm?  I want to have the gibson length in mm and then put it through the stewmac calculator

decimal inches I had to look it up and easy to read.? TO me it appears very complex and one thing it is is not standard.  the advantage of the metric system is the fineness of measurement  the advantage to inches is I used it all my life..  now I live in Europe where metric is the common measurement. I have grown to prefer it..

I was home in Montana  a couple of years ago I whipped ot my trusty metric tape to understand the length of something to see if it would fit in my home,

All it seems with decimal system is add confusion

No one uses decimal inches?  All the features we love about metric and English, combined into one easy to read system.

Actually I use both systems and now that i live in the Netherlands it is all metric. the truth is it is a much more accurate system especially for finer measurements like scales. The trick is do not convert it that just adds to confusion,,
