I find rust works best when done the old fashioned way. Leave all your metal stuff out in the rain and let it dry in the elements. Do this a few times until you have the desired effect. It seems to happen quicker if you just leave the stuff outdoors until you have the desired amount or rust and sun-bleach. Different parts will rust at different rates... because different metals rust differently. That said, all your parts will be exposed for the same amount of time giving all your pieces an organic, unified look which is hard to fabricate.
