Wow! Thanks Mr. Moore. I forgot all about that question myself. I havn't been on the web lately so havn't had time to update things. But thanbks again for the information. I settled on GDG tuning. As you mentioned I like the sound over that of a DAD tuning. Though you assumed I had a dulcimer with daitonic fretting, I'm actually useing a fretless CBG at this time and use it with a cromatic scale. All the same thanks for the feedback. I've seen a lot of talk about dulcimers lately and with 3 CBGs under my belt I might build a dulcimer next, though I'm still leery of trying to add actual frets to the fingerboard. Peace_Dan.

what chord is this? The guitar is tuned GDg, string 1-8th fret, #2-7th fret, #3-5th fret. It sounds good on my guitar, but it has intonation issues. I bar accross the 5th fret and then can play the chord and pick the strings, sometimes lifting finger(s) for a nice variety of different sounds. I'm guessing maybe c 7 minor.

This is to everyone.
Has the group tried to wriite a song as a group? Vote on a title, speed of the song etc. Have a couple members work on a part and a couple others work on another part etc, until we get a finished song. Then have someone play it, record it and post it on youtube.
It would be good practice for some and very valuable for those who have never written a song.
Just a thought.

I read a question from Dan Peel, but now as I try to reply to it, I can't see the question any more. But the question was about which tuning is better for a beginner: DAD or GDG? I assume Dan is using a 3-string cigar box, probably with diatonic fretting, which is tuned very similar to a mountain dulcimer. The three most popular mountain dulcimer tunings seem to be DAD', DAA and GDG'. For a beginner, I'd recommend DAA tuning as many popular songs include some lower notes than what DAD' gives you. So, rather than trying to pick the notes off your middle string as you might with DAD, you can play them on your melody string (string 1). So, the different sound of notes played on different strings won't be a factor (you probably have notice where one note played on sting 2 (or 3) sounds different from the supposedly identical note on string 1 (or 2). If you play all the notes on the melody string, this won't be a problem. However, if you are playing a song with a lot of really high notes in it like "Mairi's Wedding", you'll likely run out of frets with DAA tuning. With regards to GDG verses DAD, there's not much difference... they're both 1-5-8 tunings and it depends more of which sound better on your instrument and to your ear. One nice thing about 1-5-8 tunings are the "L-shaped chords" an easy to remember movable chord pattern. Hope this helps... -R.M.

I've used http://www.webstrings.com - decent strings and cheap, and several different kinds (even banjo).

Dianne: Try GuitarFetish.com. I use them and they work well.

Don't know what counts as cheap. But I get the Martin acoustic strings at my local Hastings for about $6-$7 a set and have been happy with them. I'd try my local music shops but their hours aren't as good and I can never seem to get time off work to stop in when they're actually open :)

Does anyone know where I can purchase some cheap acoustic guitar strings for my CBGs?

Lee -
Strings 3-4-5 (g D A) from a regular set seem perfect for a G-D-g tuned box. I have a long scale on my regular, 25 inches. With that guitar, nothing else really works. But those strings sing!

I also spent some 17 US dollars on a set of all-bronze Tomastik Jazz flatwounds, from Amazon.com. Most expensive part of the guitar - and they certainly paid off.
