"Many of the best, Hendrix and Vaughn to name two, make extensive use of their thumb which they wrap around the neck then over their low E.  Much of their distinctive phrasing comes from being able to to this on a thinned and tapered neck."

Why taper the width of the neck?

I've been building for a while now and like most of us, my instruments are built with a straight piece of 1.5" wide wood.I've come to really like playing with a straight fingerboard with no taper.  Now I'm starting to wonder why all mass produced stringed instruments have a tapered  necks. I don't find them any more comfortable or accessible to play then a pin straight neck. In fact I find having evenly spaced strings from nut to saddle much easier to play.Is there a reason for tapered…See More

How did you learn about Cigar Box Nation?
I've been looking at cigar box videos for a couple of years before I began building. It became quickly apparent the Cigar Box Nation is the center of the CBG Universe.

Thanks-but compared to most of the builders here I consider myself a rank amateur.

Even so,  i'm having fun scaring the neighbors with my latest build, my "Ukuklele for Dummies" book for reference and my horribly unskilled fingerings...  :)

Thanks, Rob.  I have built 10 guitars and 17 ukes.  Mostly doing ukes these days.  Easier to build, play and sell.  I am starting to use Chinese necks and fretboards because they are so damn cheap and the quality seems ok.

You are welcome, Rob, thx for accepting.

I used to post there a lot too, and Ukulele Cosmos but not many of the folks from before seem to be around those sites. Also used to frequent the 4th Peg way back when.

I run hot and cold on building due to the day job and honey-do list...

Thanks, Rob. It's just something I ended up with that wasn't a "normal" uke headstock. You've done a lot of nice work yourself. That's one thing I love about this site...all the amazing creativity.

Thanks for posting pics from the Martin tour. I'd love to do that one day.
