if you ever struggled with pallets.......http://youtu.be/v1vfvvxNhcY
This won't beat a thirty dollar cbg, but sure looks interesting!
Surfing ebay this evening I just came across Vintage Waverly Banjo Tuners x4 up for bid at $20 ... it's a geared banjo tuner that might be very interesting for someone's build. Only 2 days left, from Now! I don't really know anything more about them, but that should be enough to locate the auction..
Aw right, folks....here you go.
A complete CBG built for under $30....every step is explained in great detail and with photos....heck, even has a Parts List (with part #'s and price) for every part needed.
Book is cheap, at only $8!
Git it at:
lol That's exactly what I've got going on here... a buncha split and cracked oddball pieces that would require extensive glue joints to generate anything of suitable size... lol
I'll need to change my way of thinking and learn how to use proper glue techniques. Always plenty to learn! :-)

Thanks Rusty. I just use a skill saw and cut the thin boards between the skids. That way, no nails to worry about. Occasionally you'll find one that doesn't have ring shank nails in it and you can pry it apart with out breaking the boards, but most of the time they just break when you start prying on them. Good luck!
Thank you for directing me to your photo page JP.
Truly inspirational!
You are a very creative builder and I appreciate your advice very much.
I shall keep my eye open for better pallets and try to improve my methods of dis-assembling them for salvage.

Rusty, Don't know if I agree....the pallets I get are brand new (well, used once!) from a hospital. Pictured is the supply of beautiful oak pieces from ten pallets and about three hours of work. Probably a lifetime supply. I imagine that it would have cost me several hundred dollars for this much wood at Menards. Use a drum sander and not a planer and you don't have to worry about blades. I've built several gits out of reclaimed pallet wood, you can see pics on my page. Use those pallets man! ;-}}
Pallets are a labor intensive source of generating a rather small amount of usable wood for a recycle project.
Many are made of already re-cycled inferior wood and the random cut off nails throughout bear testimony to their re-use.
Sometimes it's just not possible to even see all of them, and by golly are they hard on saw blades!
They might be even worse on the planer blades when attempting to shave off some of the coarsest surfaces.
Underlying the metallic problems is the strong probability the palles may have been sprayed with some sort of chemical products to prevent them from molding, when sitting around on some loading dock over a period of time.
IMO, if any source of wood is available besides pallets, you should strongly consider that option.
Difficult for me to say because I'm a dyed in the wool cheapskate...

Your welcome !
Wade
Excellent idea for the trapeze tailpiece hanger, Wade !
Nice high carbon, plated steel, and good hardwood... Double plus!
(I'm almost sure I've got a pair of trousers hanging that I really don't care about any longer... lol )
And thanks again... I've got some interesting metal trays I would like to employ as resonators, and the trapeze will help me use them. :-)
