"IT" - LOL! Next attempt will be maybe a soup can or paint thinner can, something like that (if I thought I wouldn't get in trouble, I'd snipe a blade from the vertical blinds).

Quick hands-on update: Turns out the aluminum beer can material, as a fret guard, is too thin for me. It's very sharp and difficult to handle (nearly sliced my finger to shreds - OK, who didn't see that coming...go ahead say it...).

Fret guard it to protect the fretboard when crowning and polishing the frets or to say it keeps one from messing up the fretboard.

Old blinds is a great idea! Ooh, a beer can is thinner than the butter dish. I am trying that next :-)

I use old blinds cut with a dremel cut off wheel. You can get alot of them suckers from two blinds. And they flex just like the Stewmac ones for a curved fretboard.

Low budget fret guard - butter dish lid. Stewmac has nice, steel, fret guards for a pretty good price. I learned my lesson and checked Gitty first, but not available yet (

the inventory grows quickly). So... I made my own. I used a bandsaw and a few passes; an x-acto knife would have been quicker and cleaner. BTW, I turned the pen in this picture on a mini lathe - it's a corn cob from Iowa (gotta have hobbies - hahaha).
