David- yup, This is an old piece of wood. Very solid.  It takes some digging, but I've found stock at Lowe's and Home Depot that are nearly quartersawn pieces. Not this many rings though!

Wade- Sturdier, too, because it look like it's oriented mostly like quarter-sawn- the wide dimension perpendicular to the growth rings.

Yes, so far nothing beats old salvaged wood with lots of tight grain. It also is usually dried out by now and done warping. My favorite neck came from a 200yr old building- I think it's pine- light and sturdy.

It's all about what's possible.... you can build with really minimal toos, with the help of stuff from the yard, but... the more tools you have, the more you can recycle, repurpose....

Not to be too snooty- it occurs to me that buying dimensioned moulding is a GREAT solution, especially if you don't have access to things like table saws with which to shape salvaged wood.

I'm just sayin'...

I'm with you,W. Sam. Going to the hardware store or lumber yard and paying for dimensioned lumber or moulding seems contrary to the spirit
of the thing. My best necks to date have come from two planks I trash-picked. One is maple and one mahogany; both came out of older homes being remodeled, where they'd already done 50-100 years of service.

keep your eyes open when you're driving down the road.  People are always setting out junk with "free" signs.  Often old furniture is solid wood that can be cut up into necks, etc.  I've gotten great maple, oak, cherry and mahogany from table tops and bed headboards this way.....

OK, I'll ad something to help keep it up.  I use the liners from the all wood box's to make my piezo bridge sandwich out of. Most of them are solid wood, the plywood ones don't work as well. Its free and should come out of the box anyway.

Not earth shattering but its all I've got this morning.
