As you tune the string does the bolt go further in or does it turn and lock in place?

Sam,
2 nuts for each bolt, or just one?

I wish I would have organized this group into categories, but that's me, unorganized. Maybe I can get Shane or someone to edit this info so it's easier to search for info in the future.

Diamondback,

I've done it on guitars and basses using weedwacker line and it works pretty good. cut a slotted headstock, embed a self-locking nut in each rail and you're good to go!!!

hope this helps,,

Hey guys quick question. I've seen pictures of CBGs that use nuts and bolts for tuning machines. Does anyone know how to do that? I understand to drill a hole in the bolt for the string but it seems to me that you'd have a hard time tuning it up.

Hi all,
I picked up a pair of giant fork and spoons today at a local thrift shop, you know the 'polynesian' or 'tiki' type that folkks used to hand on the wall. It turns out these are made from either ebony or cocobolo wood.
They are about 30 inches long and 1 7/8" wide at one end and 2 1/4 " wide at the other, and about 1 inch thick.
I figure to trim the end where the spoon bowl or fork tines are to put in a nut and shape for a headstock and tuners.
At least one of them will make it a neck for the 6 string smokin' strat I'm working on.

How to build a pickup:

1: Get magnets. Alnico is the standard. Use smallish ones, size isn't to critical.
Round or bar magnets are easier for beginners because you can wrap the wire right on the magnet.
2: Get wire. Use 40 guage or smaller, commercial pickups use 42 or sometimes 43 guage. stewmac.com has some. Also old solinoids, speaker coils, telephone speaker and mic coils can be unwound and carefully CAREFULLY joined together. It's not to expensive to buy, it's called 42 awg enamel or formovar coated magnet wire if you wanna google it. Or just google: 42 awg coated magnet wire
3: dip magnet in laquer, let dry
4: wrap wire around magnet again and again until a multimeter on the ends reads at least 5,000 ohms. More ohms = more output, less high end, more mids, can get muddy if you go to high.
I've stuck the magnet to the fridge, sat there with a beer and wound 5k in about an hour several times, it's not too bad.
5: Get creative and build a winder already!
