Hey all... Wiring novice/newly addicted cbg-er here... I have 2 volume pots and am under the assumption that I can turn one of them into a tone control. In the many diagrams I've looked at I notice a capacitor tied into the mix...

I was hoping one of you masters would be so kind as to drop some knowledge on me. Am I on the right track? And, more importantly, if so, how do I pull this off??

Much appreciated!

I believe you do need a cap to make it a tone control. Go to stewmac.com, click on a wiring product (caps or whatever) and then click on more information. It usually takes you to some good plans.
Thanks much, Ben... I'll check it out.
Check out Seymour Duncans website too, go to wiring diagrams, and select the combination you want.... most helpful!
Great resource! Thanks Rooster...

Thanks Ted... my main question is how to turn that volume pot into a tone control... and from the looks of all the diagrams I've seen I need to add a .047 cap to it. Seems easy enough... if I'm understanding it. ;) Thanks again, man!
In case another virgin cbg-er seeks info on wiring... i found my answer (to this thread) in the Wiring Diagrams section of the Seymour Duncan website. Great resource. Cheers to Randy & Ted.
Ted. It should be POINT .023 or .047 (microfarad). Typo? I wonder what a CBG would sound like with a 50uFD Cap!
If I understand it correctly (not a good bet, lol), multiplying the capacitance by 10 would lower the cut off freq by an octave and a half or so (i.e., divide the freq by SQRT(10)). Probably give you a pretty dark sound. Might be good for a piezo, but the peizo is already a capacitor so I think that's hard to figure out.

Whoops. I was wrong, but found better info... Multiplying the Capacitance by 10 would lower the cutoff freq 3 octaves and a bit. That would almost certainly cut into the notes you were actually playing.

The cutoff freq is f = 1 / (2*pi*R*C) where R is the resistance (actually impedance?) and C is the capacitance.

Does that mean you need a much smaller cap for a piezo because it has a much higher resistance than an EM pickup?

Well, whether we refer to it as 47 or .047 it sounds pretty filthy - in a great way. Love it. Thanks again guys.
OK I will let you guys slide...(no pun intended ) As an electronics design engineer, and component level repair tech form 40 something years, it's just habit to be precise, detailed, anal, etc., etc., Just thinking of the guy who wouldn't know 47 from .047.

Now, as far as 'brain farts', awe shit, I just had one. I can't remember what I was gonna say!

Oh yeah...I know...
