I'm thinking about buying a bench top drill press, mostly for doing tuner holes. Have used a hand drill up till now, with varying results. I'm leaning towards the 8 inch Wen, 75$ - + . Anybody have one of these?

I don't have the drill press but I have a Wen combo sander I got for Christmas and I'm pretty impressed with it.  The quality is quite good for the price.

The things I would point out is the height adjustment is a lot easier with the rack and gear type vs just a clamp and the adjustment height range is kind of small. I found a older bigger used one for $50, if you are okay with used ones.

I have some Wen tools, no complaints, I even had a cheaper Harbor Freight drill press, pretty much the same as the Wen, no problems.

I have a 8in. harbor freight drill press. I wish it was much bigger. Like has been said for doing tuners you will be fine with anything but for many other tasks it will limit you. I would look for a used larger one also. Good thing about buying used is you can check it out before you buy. The chuck on mine has a small wobble in it so I kinda have to squint and find center.

I would go with one that has a crank to raise/lower the table.

Thanks for the reply's, just ordered the drill press.

Used my new drill press this weekend, to do the tuner holes on my current project(6 string lap steel). Very happy with the unit, very solid and quiet.

I'm late to the party here, but I looked at the Wen and went with the slightly more expensive Skil. Why?

Three year warranty with a track record of handling problems.  Cost more though, but there's another option out there.

And nice holes!

I got the WEN version on Amazon with laser guide. Even though it was a 4 star rating, I was a little skeptical because of the severe 1 star complaints.

Anyway, I've been impressed with it for the money. Almost no runout, very smooth. The table does raise/lower and while it's a little clunky in that area, it works. The entire thing was given a ridiculous grease bath before shipping.

The laser guide is completely worthless. Just not accurate enough for me. Light is handy for sure!
