So I am planning my CBG build, and I have a stack of boxes to use, but in running through ideas I was thinking about the acoustic properties of a CBG. The better sounding CBGs' are usualy made using the deeper boxes. There tends to be more resonance from larger air spaces. Also the boxes I have either have plywood bottoms or paper lids. This dampens the sound. Also a friend of mine would like me to make him a CB cello. This calls for a bigger box...
I've been going over all sorts of ideas on how to replace the bottom of the boxes with solid cedar or reinforce boxes with solid bracing for more tensile strength. It would be easy to replace and customize just about any box or box part; But then just as easy to just make my own box. I am a proffesional woodworker and have made dovetailed, and fingerjointed boxes for everything from art gear to custom cases, and PA systems, as well as furniture.
That being said, how would the CBG Nation react to custom made boxes? I could make any wall thickness, use figured woods, and create any size, with all sorts of custom joinery, in any configuration. I could offer anything from stained and finished boxes with port holes, to a raw box ready for your own customization... If you have any thoughts on this or would like to commission a box or two , or more... Please view my website at www.ToddCreatedWood.com. Then send me a e-mail or call me directly to discuss what you are looking for.

Shawn,
A box of that nature would be simple to build. Contact me via email if you'd like a quote. I'd need to know what kind of joinery you'd want at the corners, what woods you are interested in using, what level of fishing you're looking for, and to what degree of completion you require. You've got some fun guitars on your page.
I think where custom-made boxes would be most valuable is in mass-producing CBGs. In that case the consistency and ease of working with a custom box would reduce labor more than enough to offset the per-box cost. A similar need could be for workshops - where you need to walk everyone through the exact same build instructions.

Or getting just the right box for a resonator cone - which can otherwise take a while to find, especially if you want a nice looking wood box.

Can you give a price range that you're targeting?
Those are all great possibilities. Right now, as a one off venture, the price sits between $75- $100 per box. But, if there were a bulk order I could most likely get the price per box down lower... If you know of any outlets for recommendations of my work, I would be most appreciative... Bulk orders would certainly be welcome. The custom orders of the special box sizes like you mentioned are deffinately my specialty though. The more intricate and the more unique the better. I do some very special woodworking. And, excell at ultra fine woodworking techniques. Thanks for the ideas.
Todd,

I had an idea for your high quility work. Maybe you could offer custom pre-strested X braced tops for folks that have a favorite box they would like to build.

My thought on this is a lot of high quility guitars have plywood back and sides with a good solid wood top option. Guitars made like this do sound very good.

I heard a fellow on youtube build a uke this way and it's sound was alot loader and far better than an instrument just built from a cigar box, his oppion as well. The best of both worlds it appears.

I have the highest regard for your work and this idea could be a great item to sell.

Cheers
Bob:)
That's a great idea. I had thought of doing that with one of my own builds but, had ultimately decided if I were going to go through all the work of cutting away the old ply bottom and making a new soundboard, I might as well just make a new box too. But, that could be a great cost effective measure while still using the old boxes. I'll do that to a few of my own boxes, and then offer them up for sale. I could actually even cut the bracing and glue them to precut tops for others to glue down to a boxes themselves.... Given that they have a tablesaw.... Great idea Bob. Thanks

Anything goes. This is a prejudice free zone. If you build it, they will come.
Hmmmmm I think I heard that somewhere LOL
i think it's a fantastic idea...i've been going over doing some of the same my self i'll keep you posted on my progress
Hi Todd :)

I think, if you make a box and put a cigar into it,..... it´s a cigarbox.

all the best
Jon
Jon,
I like your thinking:)

Ive been searching for something big enough to build a bass. bu8t the custom box idea didnt interest me due to the lack of authenticity. or artwork.I know some people build box frames to improve thier builds tone and strength. But i have always stuck to what I can make outta the box I get.
If there was some way to mimic the top of the box to look like a wine, ammo, cigar, vintage anything that looked authentic and interesting enough to build around I would love to have figured back and sides, dovetailed corners and the availability to choose my woods.
If this is something you start doing. And I cxan afford it. I will look into getting some type of vintage lableing for the tops and if i was successful Id be a customer for sure.
