banjo fret scale?

Bear, I'd like to try a short scale banjo - about 20.5 inches or so. I'm assuming that I'll use standard banjo strings and get a fret scale from a baritone uke I've got (or fret calculator). Any tho…

For those that do scarf joints for head stock....

A CBGer with a lot of experience created a video in which he used a block plane to take a rough cut scarf joint and make it perfect. I think he may have been from this site. If you can't get a good…

How do I make slides?

Not a problem: you can drink the beer and ask for the wine bottle. ;-)

How do I make slides?

I've tried a few methods: scoring/heading/cracking: - scoring with a glass cutting tool - didn't work well on round necks. - scoring with a triangular file - this works much better. It's very import…

I think where custom-made boxes would be most valuable is in mass-producing CBGs. In that case the consistency and ease of working with a custom box would reduce labor more than enough to offset the per-box cost. A similar need could be for workshop…

> Here's one that is so not like any Tom Waits I've ever seen... He's playing piano, singing a torch song.... That's from "Nighthawks at the Diner" where Tom talks his way between songs. That's a fun album. You might also want to check out "Closin…

> there are no rules I'm not normally a nit-picker, but I think that's just short for "there are less rules than you'd think". At least until I see more successful CBGs with fishing line, 8ga wiring, rubber bands, coat hangers, hemp rope, nylon ro…

Tracy, I'm working with an artist group in my home town to build these for local kids. Ideally we'll end up with a couple dozen less kids playing videos all summer and maybe doing something more exciting. Anyhow, I'm putting together a document tha…

Hard to say, got a lot of favorites - especially off of Blue Valentine. Maybe because most other people skip this one. Anyhow, here's a few: $29: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGyxy8k_E0U&feature=PlayList&p=B5CD9CB247EBA4F8&playnext_from=PL&playne

I've seen so many testimonials from you about this saw that I believe you. :-) I've got a thinner kerf japanese flush cut saw from years ago and I've always enjoyed using it for cutting pegs flush, etc. I just got this for cutting fret and I'm real…

Anything you get there is the result of short-cuts in design, materials, and manufacturing. Contributing to the trade-imbalance is just the icing on the cake. So, if I go there (or walmart for that matter) I try to mostly just buy tools that are ha…

If you don't think it'll make a good CBG - you could use it for a small two-speaker amp.

Diane, you build some great looking instruments - that red & green one is just great. You're out of Chicago, right? I was wondering if it's a lot easier to find cool old materials in older communities.

Regarding threaded rod - I've used that in the past, but these days prefer a 20p nail, round & smooth part of a 3/8th iron lag bolt, etc. A hacksaw or file can easily tear through that soft iron to make the slots you need.

Would anyone be interested in creating a simple database of cigar boxes? I was thinking about documenting dimensions, materials, materials grade, paper removal notes, etc, etc...
