String gauges depend on the scale...I use 022w, 014 and 010, tuned GDG on a 22 1/2 inch scale. For this sort of instrument you're better buying individual strings, as splitting a regular set rarely gives you the right gauges.

Yep, its dependent on the string height. I make it as low as possible but not so low that you have string buzz when using a slide bar. The height at the nut is about 3 to 5 32nd's and at the bridge its about 3/8ths to 1/4"
