Cigar Box Nation proudly announces the winners of the 2017 Paint Lid Resonator contest.  We asked you to use common paint can lids as poor-boy resonators and you responded with some fantastic builds.

The contest was judged by Damian Fanelli, online editor of Guitar World Magazine based on the photos you provided.

The paint lid reso concept was the idea of North Hollywood, CA luthier, Matty Baratto.  He’s been building these ResoFiddles (the resonator version of his CigFiddles) since 1995 and has made them for Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Grohl, Johnny Depp and others.  Not only was it amazing to see Baratto actually enter his #250 guitar in the contest, it was even more mind blowing that he was edged out of the #1 slot.  Here’s the top three winners:

Crowdaddy gets first prize, a $100 C. B. Gitty Gift Certificate and bragging rights.  Guitar World comments, “(this is) the one I’d most like to own.  I love the controls being on top… it’s nice and traditional with some extras.”

Matty Baratto comes in second place with his ResoFiddle #250.  He will receive a $50 gift certificate from C. B. Gitty Crafter Supply.

Third place goes to Alberto Magotti.  Guitar World comments, “(this is) a very attractive box…cool looking.”  Magotti receives a $25 gift certificate from C. B. Gitty Crafter Supply.

More contests!!!  We are in the midst of the 2x4 Contest. Also, stay tuned for these upcoming build-offs:

  • June 2017 – Plumbing/HVAC parts guitars
  • July 2017 – 100% Recycled Materials (aka the MacGyver contest!)
  • August 2017 – Historical Contest (create an instrument from our historical plans)
  • September 2017 – Planes, Trains & Automobiles (Build a guitar from car, bike, vehicle parts)

Congrats to the deserving winners! I'm having a ball with these challenges!

Congrats to all. Many interesting entries.

This 2x4 challenge is tough...too many ideas in my head. lol

We never said you were limited to one entry...  :)

Cool, I have about three more to enter soon. I'm disqualifying myself on one of them though since it is a 2x4 but it's solid cherry I may put it in anyway and assume the judges will throw it out!

I haven't read the rules but do they designate a species or just say 2x4, isn't cigar box guitar building a No Rules game anyway. If you need more cherry I've got a shed full of it, still rough cut, but the bugs have invaded it. I need to do something with it before it is completely ruined

:)

congrats to the winners and all that participated  .

Hope you don't mind me sharing this page with non-cigar box types, most have not seen the cream of the crop builds. Congrats's to all the winners, naturally I have a soft spot for the sunburst. :)

Congrats to the winners and all who participated.  I followed the entries and saw many, many fine builds and great ideas. Nice work all!!

Yup.  Good contest, great entries and winners.

Congratulations to all the Winners and Partiscipans  in the Paintlid Contest!

Congrats to the 3 winners... All Builds were A Winner to me..
