I`m doing one of those right now, as an upright with a beer advertising plate as the top cover, so no need for the paints at all there, as the shield is a ceramic finish.
Great to see that someone else is doing some of this crazy stuff, makes me feel not such an idiot at the end of the day....

You could try getting a sponsor as I did from the brewery, or a local tabacco dealer, or some musical supplier, etc....
