I am working on trying to make a set of LEDs flash. Here is what I would like to end up with:

I have a 9V DC powered set of 8 LEDs, which would be normally on, with an On/Off switch.

When the lights are tuned on, and a secondary switch is tripped, the lights will flash for X number of seconds, possibly adjustable duration, but not required,  then go back to solid On.

I have seen some of those 555 chips that seem like they might do what I need them to, I just am not electrically savvy enough to work this out myself.

Anybody got an idea on how I can accomplish this?

Thanks

I know I'm not...

Yea, I didn't expect too much, I was just kind of hoping that we might have someone on the Nation who knew this kind of stuff.

Dan,
My son is an electrical engineer. He is out of town but will be back tomorrow. I will see if he can help out.

Jim "Gdawg" Hancock

Thanks Jim, that would be awesome!!

I don't necessarily need/want to make something from scratch. If there was some existing circuit board out there that I could modify, that would work too. I had actually been looking around at the different Christmas tree lights to see if there was something I could use.

Hi Dan,

There are loads of LED light kits available (never used these particular kits so cannot say how good they are)
For example http://store.qkits.com/category.cfm/led a google search will give you many hits if you put in electronics LED lights kit (if you miss out the "electronics" you will get a heap of home lighting pages).
You can get sound to light effects as a stick on pad that runs on AAA batteries or fancy sound to light stickers meant to plug in a car lighter socket which I assume could be hacked. If this is of interest I can add some links. There is an old discussion http://www.cigarboxnation.com/forum/topics/led-pickup-light about sound to light LEDs.
There are some cheap light effects on eBay like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1M-Flexible-Neon-Light-Glow-EL-Wire-Rope-...
Please note I have only used an EL t shirt sound to light sticker but that is good for the price. I don't know how good or bad the other products are.

Regards,
David

Thanks David, I will give them a look when I get a second.

The hard part was finding one that would blink for X number of seconds, then return to solid on mode.

So, the lights are on solid. When a switch is triggered, the lights flash for 4 seconds, then go back to solid again.

Maybe something like they use on vehicles...LED strobe controller....???

link

sorta like this, though 12v

Thanks David and Fatboy, that helped a lot!!!

I think the only thing I need to sort out is how to activate the flasher circuit for X number of seconds.

Make yourself one of these Dan

Then at your next CBG gig add this kind of light show :O)
