Good work Dan. A word of warning to people - your printer will not necessarily print out a scale accurately. It could be quite badly off.  Mine was terrible. There are some scale printer programs that include a calibration to correct for the errors your printer may introduce, but I don't trust them. Didn't do it perfectly. Anyway, I used to make scale templates on a  strip of aluminium but realised I'm going to change scale lengths frequently so now I just use ExMI and measure it out with a ruler.

Your 'minimalist' approach to this process is something I really appreciate.  Your techniques will save me lots of time and improve my accuracy.  Can't ask for mush more than that.

Thanks and Merry Christmas

Dan,

Thank you for posting this video on fretting a neck.  I  found it very clear and informative, probably the best one out there!  I have a question though.  You were doing this on an unfinished neck.  When you apply your finish, how do you keep it off the frets, or do you apply your finish over the frets after they are in?  I'm sure a lot depends on what type of finish you're applying, like lacquer, varnish, shellac, oil or whatever.  I'm working on a seperate fret board for my current project that will have a tung oil finish.  Would you install the frets before or after oiling it?  Thanks!

I put a spare piece of carpet on my workbench so the neck doesn't slide around, but yea, you could clamp the neck down if it was sliding around while you were sawing.

My only other tip is to clamp down your work piece to your work bench so you don't have two moving pieces (the saw and the work piece) to contend with.

Dan

Thanks for taking the time to shoot the video. I got a couple of new ideas for fretting based on your technique.

This is fantastic Dan.  Thanks for sharing.  You showed me about printing the fret calculator strip, I've done that ever since.  Now I can see all your other tricks.
