4 string Celtic tunings

Started this discussion. Last reply by Penny Nelson Mar 30. 13 Replies

I've been playing a round with tunings a bit. Personally I prefer modal tunings to triad tunings, so I usually tune a 4 string to GDGD. That tuning has a lot of possibilities, and for someone like me…Continue

OK, so a day of frigging around with different stuff has lead me to a passive tone control for piezo. Some background: If you ever tried a normal guitar volume and tone setup on a passive piezo,…Continue

Anyone interested in a preamp kit?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Glenn Reither Jan 16, 2012. 2 Replies

Hi cbg-ers. I am looking at making the Don Tillman preamp circuit available as a printed board for those who don't have experience in soldering up circuits. I've found the Tillman circuit to be very…Continue

Tillman pre my build

"Yeah...I use log for both. There's no particular advantage in linear pots - my opinion. 50k vol and 25k tone, or two 50k. I think mixing the 50k and 25k gives better tonal range over the travel of the tone pot, but experiment for yourself. You…"

Tillman pre my build

"Oh yes, what type of pots do you use for the volume and tone, I ALWAYS get the whole "A/B" - "log/linear" thing confused."

"Hi Jose, Yes, the advantage of stretch-compensated frets is that you can set your action a little higher (gives better tone and easier slide playing) while still getting good intonation. So how high is high? The highest I have done that still frets…"

I'm so glad I found the CBG revolution! Just stumbled across one on Youtube and that was it. Had to have one, and seemed silly to buy something when the whole point is you can make it yourself.
I'm a pro musician (keys and sax - I'm the worst guitarist ever) and I've toured a lot in Australia and overseas with major label acts. Spent 6 years on the tour bus through the USA with Little River Band. Have done some jingle and soundtrack stuff. Building CBGs is a passion now and I've sold a few, mostly to justify the expense of tools and stuff but also so I don't end up with 20 guitars in my living room.
This site and the community here has been very helpful and I've met some great peeps so twang you all very much.

slide and frets compromise?

Posted on March 27, 2010 at 1:32pm 2 Comments

Hi. I'm new to this so please forgive the stoopid question. My first build is pretty cool BUT tends to play sharp when I am fretting a string. I don't want to bring the action down too far cos then it will be too low for slide. What's a good compromise. Any actual measurements of string height at nut and bridge? Thanks guys!

I made a few beginners videos and posted them on my page here, one of them is how to fret, or at least the way I do it anyway.

It's just a big box with strings on it!

Everything else is the basic stuff like a regualr guitar.

I have a stencil for most of my artwork so I can redo it on other guitars. I usually make the stencil and then hand paint over that.
