Started this discussion. Last reply by Jon Grinder Nov 29, 2011. 1 Reply

I've been searching around for an amp that would work well and sound good with my CBG.  I looks hard at Gitty's cigar box amps and a variety of others.  After watching and listening to seems like…Continue

First Build Starting Today, 3 or 4 Strings???

Started this discussion. Last reply by Richard G Caudill Oct 29, 2011. 5 Replies

I did a search on the question of 3 or 4 strings.  One of the contributors to what I read said the purpose should dictate the number of threads.  Sounds like a good approach. I don't presently do…Continue

Beginning Box Building. Nothing too fancy, but functional. For people who don't have easy access to cigar boxes. Other home made non-rectangular box resonator discussions are also welcome.See More

"First of all, I know next to nothing about resonator guitars other than I like them. Your neck looks like it is contacting the top of the tin.  Just wondering if it would be good to have some space between the neck and the top so maybe it…"

"I agree with Chris. A decent hand plane with a super sharp iron will leave a surface ready for finishing and trim edges true. An olderStanley/Bailey orRecordcan be found online and there are some newer planes that will do the job. If you have one…"

"Me too mate, weather here has turned cold. Do you have an old hand plane of any kind, slow hard work but it's what the old masters used, I still use a cabinet scraper for detailed work, can't be beaten. Let me know how you get on mate. All…"

"Chris, I'm going to use Tims design on my next project which will be a resonator with a pretty big box. I don't have a planer (sp?) or a jointer, or a belt sander.  I do have an old Sears cast iron 10" table saw, a router and a…"

"Chris, The threaded rod in the mandolin is adjustable.  I countersunk the nut on the outside of the box so that it can't be seen.  Works very well.  "

"Hi Fred, I live in the good old UK and we have some real lousy weather and wood moves day to day depending on the conditions, winters wet and windy, summers hot wet and anything that the gods throw at us and a well seasoned oak should be six years…"

Jim Olean (JimO) replied to Fred Railsback's discussion One For The Woodworkers in the group Building a Cigar Box Guitar 101
"Fred, if you have the milling capabilities, like a jointer and planer, you should try and find a source of un finished wood. You can get allot of yield out of a stick of 5/4.  Oak seems to warp, de-stress, more than other woods.  Whatever…"

How to fret a neck

"Your 'minimalist' approach to this process is something I really appreciate.  Your techniques will save me lots of time and improve my accuracy.  Can't ask for mush more than that.   Thanks and Merry Christmas Fred"

Fred Railsback replied to Chris Cremeans's discussion Does the size of the cigar box matter , how does it affect the instrument over all? in the group Building a Cigar Box Guitar 101
"I'm just guessing here, but with regular acoustic guitars size and volume do matter.  An example would be a dreadnought or jumbo vs a parlor guitar.  Clearly things such as bracing, wood types and grade, etc make a difference too.…"

Fred, no problem, it's simply called Pekin Hardwood, and they're just a minute or two off Rt29 just south of Powerton lake. They have a web site you can take a look at too.
