I thought it'd be a great idea to put the latest albums up from the artists playing at Bluesfest - so those of you lucky enough to go can check out what you want to see. And for those of you overseas who, I'm sure, will be extremely jealous. So…Continue

The Rolling Stones – Some Girls [Deluxe Edition] (2011)
http://www.fileserve.com/file/pqaRdRa
The unceasing campaign by the Rolling Stones‘ camp to wring every last drop of revenue out of one of rock’s great catalogues continues with this deluxe version of what’s widely considered their last great album, the lure being a second CD of 12 other songs from that era. Why couldn’t they have put out those songs when the remastered version of Some Girls appeared two years ago? The tracks themselves – tidied up from demos with the help of producers Chris Kimsey and Don Was – are no disgrace. You can see why they didn’t work on the original album – with the exception of So Young, yet another Jagger lyric about age-inappropriate lust, they don’t quite fit with its vicious tone – but they’d make a decent mid-70s Stones record on their own. The highlights come when the band go country – No Spare Parts is a beautifully restrained country-rock ballad that would have graced Exile on Main Street, and a cover of We Had It All, once a hit for Waylon Jennings, has a vulnerability perfect for Keith Richards’ wracked voice.

A Horror Country band? Well that's how they're marketed...Take away the hype & what you have are a 6 piece band, so far as the main members go, who sing & chant about the devil, werewolves, vampires, mummy's & the like, in great foot-stomping fashion! They aren't country, they aren't blues, nor rockabilly & they aren't punk, yet somehow they manage to combine all of these elements & more when at their best.
Their highly charged & fun lives show, particularly in Melbourne, quickly shot them to some prominence in a very short space of time. This is their second release (2010) following on from 2009's The Serpent & The Crow. Although this album does not carry the same force as a live performance it does provide a fair slab of entertainment & a good insight into their strong musicianship, including the use of hammer & chain, dobro, washboard, banjo & loads of horns.
Get your self a good stiff drink, put on your stomping boots & get down with the Graveyard Train. Oh & it always helps if you have not had a shower or shave in a good few weeks!
Very funny audience clip: Live at the Williamstown RSL, Melbourne, Australia!
