I just finished my CBG and haven't found a string gauge/tuning combination that sounds/plays very good yet. I broke one string trying to get a bigger sound out the box, unfortunately it was the middle one, but using the #2 string (along with the #3 and #5) now. They are a 13, a 17, and 36 on a 600mm (~23.5") scale tuned GdG which sounds alright. The instrument dictates in this matter, I think.

Thanks Bluesboy and Lee. As far as singing goes, I don't carry much of a tune, so I'll try the different tunings as you guys sugested. Right now I've been practicing with an open G tuning. I'll try the others next.

Lee is correct, the tuning is up to you, if you sing, i'd try different tunings until you find one that fits your voice. If you don't sing, try 'em all : )
I went thru 5 tunings until I found what I THOUGHT would be 'my tuning': open G. Then the other day I played a tenor banjo tuned to open C and I could actually sing most of my songs in C as well. Apparently I'm getting better at singing because I can now sing in the keys of E, D, A, G and C when I thought I could ONLY sing in E when I started playing open tuned blues 12 years ago. Bottom line: keeping practicing in all keys.

D A D is relatively the same as G D G, only five steps up. I think your CBG , voice or where you resonate/what you prefer.

I understand this has more to do with opinion but what tuning is better for a beginner a G.D.G, or a D.A.D. tuning? Or does it make a difference? Sorry if this is a stupid question but I have no prior guitar knowledge.

Just uploaded my first recorded lick to CBN. I just plugged my guitar into the mic port on my laptop. It's just a boring lick but it was my first attempt at finger picking too. Used MS Sound Recorder and converted to mp3 with Real Player.

Rickshaw Ron's question about old time country music got me wondering where the "Major" notes are on this box. I took a stab at hacking some "old-timey sounding" audio bites. I'm still learning how to work the slide, so pretty sloppy (folks make slide work look sooo easy). Think of it as "proof of concept" hahaha!
