Oh, and while on the subject of clamping and glue, someone did point out something I do need to clarify. When I did say no clamping on the gelatine glue, obviously there are times when clamping is necessary! I have that situation currently with a bent fretboard that simply will not stay down on its own, so I must use clamps or at least tape them down. Certainly use clamps if you feel you need to.

Sorry for the confusion.

Any suggestions on an "Ideal" box size to get the fullest sound?? Most of the boxes I have found are smaller than what I see on this site, at least it appears so.

Poplar is fine up to four stings if you are adding a fret board, nothing is going to bow that.

I would personally stay away from poplar then! Unless you're building wooden shoes.... I'm sure it's OK for shorter scale lengths and nylon strings, like a ukulele. That's my opinion anyway.

Any suggestions to avoid neck warping?? I am building my first and don't want any issues. I have a pretty nice piece of straight grain poplar that I am laminating an ebony or walnut to (thinking about saving the ebony for a later cbg) but don't know how much pull/tension the strings will put on the neck.

Pics of my recent build. No clamps were used on these joints.

Travis, yes!!! this sounds crazy but I use hide/gelatine glue. Sets quickly and even acts as its own clamp. Look on this site for "oyster glue" or follow this:

Mix (1) 1/4 oz packet knox unflavored gelatine with 3/4 oz cold water (1:3 mix) until blended. May need to let set for 5-10 mins. Heat mixture in double boiler (or the like) until 150F. No more! Let sit and skim off bubbles/scum. Reheat to 150F and apply to work. Hold work together until set (~1-5 mins). Let set up for 1-5 hrs (makes glue set really hard).

Can be used to fill cracks, holes, blended with sawdust as a filler, can be sanded really well and removed with hot water. Also is great because has a greater shear strength than PVA glue as well has no "creep". Can be painted, stained, or clear coated better than PVA glues. Can also be removed easily with heat/water.

Any tips on clamping the scarf joint when gluing without the joint squeezing apart?
