I took a similar approach with my first CBG and came up with a figure of 38mm for the neck width (ie. pretty much an inch and a half). On a 4-stringer that gave room for the strings to be spaced about the same as a normal guitar. That seemed to work out OK and I've stuck with similar dimensions ever since. I use it for three and four strings - so I end up with a wider string spacing on 3-stringers. The narrowest neck I've made was an inch and a quarter for a 3-stringer.

Frankly, I wouldn't worry too much about ending up with string spacings that are a little wider than a regular six-stringer. A CBG is a different instrument from a regular guitar even though they have obvious things in common, so you can't avoid tactile differences. It's not something to worry about and I think it can even end up helping you to learn more about the guitar than if you just stick to a conventional instrument with a conventional tuning.

Just my opinion, others may obviously have different thoughts or experiences.

Looking for a quick answer to 4-string guitar neck width. It's late, and I have to toss my oak 1x4 in the car to take to work in the morning...someone with proper tools is going to plane it for me and rip me a couple planks....every time I search, I don't find anything with dimensions...just lots of other interesting distractions and plans that are kind of flexible...I might just measure the width of a 6-string neck and make is about 2/3 as wide and double check the math. I think I would like it to feel similar to a 6-string as I don't want any tactile or tuning confusion yet...a newbie trying to learn a conventional axe as well...I'll probably tune it EADG to keep my brain from exploding.

Thanks

Murray

Hey Howlin' Dick. The piezo will give you a beautiful sound. I think it may be even sweeter than a wound pick-up. It makes your instrument distinct and pure!

When I plug my piezo uke into Fender amp can, I can blow windows out if I crank it up. I have to play "clean" (no gain, no distortion) so I don't sound like Jimi Hendrix, but that's ok.

Howlin,
"Piezo Transducer" Yes a piezo is good for sound, its what we all use other than a wound pickup.

Well everything looks ready to go now apart from the electrics and strings (probably the difficult bits).

I was planning to fit my first guitar with a simple piazio(?) inducer and no controls. I have learned a little and bought a pikup and controls but probably will save them for my next guitar wwhich hopefully will be an improvement on this (Ive learned so much).

The only thing thats holding me back is being told the piazo (which Im putting directly under the saddle) wont be much of a sound.

Do you agree?

Wichita Sam knows more about this than I do. I'm just the geek with no life who has too much time on my hands (actually, it's just that the workshop is closed until next week -- I'm jonesing here). For a slide guitar, the sky is the limit. On many lapsteels, the frets are just there as markers.

On the second one, you will want to use the frets. At the 12th fret, 3/64ths" is medium action. 4/64ths (1/16 to you purists) is high, and 2/64 (1/32nd) is low. These are numbers for electric guitars, which tend to have lower actions than classical. See http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/action.htm or http://www.bryankimsey.com/setup/ for a more coherent explanation...

Start with a higher action than you think you will need. You can try it out and lower it a touch if necessary. But if you go too low, you may need a new nut or saddle.

Wichita Sam is the guy to ask...

Thanks all for the feedback. I have the equipment to re-drill the pins if needed, but I'll hold that back as a last resort. Alan - the first one will probably be a slide guitar for my son, but I'd like to build a second one right after that with a lower action for fingers. Any suggestions for the action heights I should aim for in either case?
