Welcome James, I have built a few Ukes and would be glad to help with any info I may be able to supply. It looks like your daughter is happy with your first build!

Greetings all.  I'm new here.  I just finished my first cigar box ukulele (made for my daughter from a kit).  I'm hoping next to build a resonator cigar box 3-string guitar and will be looking for guidance here on Cigar Box Nation.

I used to round the corners off with a stationary belt sander but on the last several I have been using a spokeshave or draw knife to whittle it down And then follow up with sanding with really good results. Mine is made by Flex Cut.

I do..I like my neck to have the feel and look of a guitar...I use a router bit and a 4 n 1 file to rought it out...Then hand sand...starting with a 100grit and stoping @ 220....

Do you guys radius your necks at all? I used a sanding sponge to put a little bit on one of my latest builds and it worked pretty well. I probably could have sanded some more off, but seemed to make a better playing neck. Now if I can get a handlee on the intonation issues with my other build...

It also help having the right tools for the job...Some people like to make their own tools...which is fine...I rather be making CBG...Sooooo...If you going to really get into this...I would check out Stewmac....

I cut mine to the right length and bevel the ends and knock the sharp corners off BEFORE I fit the frets now. Gives a smoother feel under the fingers for me, and doesn't take much longer than filing after fitting.

Hey MadGomer... I'm still figuring it all out myself, but one thing I've learned about the crowning stuff is that you don't want to go absolutely nuts with the file. I use the medium side of the Stewmac medium/narrow file and it doesn't take much to put a crown on the frets after leveling and beveling. Just be sure you make the same number of passes over each fret -and with a pretty light touch. I usually do 8 or 10 light passes across each fret. At the end, I also give each fret a couple of angled swipes on either side to clean up any burrs or sharp edges.

Hey Suspect Device - - since you mentioned crowning, do you have any tips to share on that?  I haven't done it on my builds yet, but was wanting to for my next one.
