You really don't need to use anything if you don't want to. You can just drill a 1 inch hole and call it good.

 

You can find a variety of other dress up pieces that you can push into the hole to make it look nice. Check out the grommets that CB Gitty sells. He advertises on this site.

Also f holes look good and Diane in Chicago has a good link to f hole templates  ( page 2 and 3 from the download link) in this discussion

Even carved shapes can be nice. I recently carved out maple leaves for sound holes in a build.
