I found n old coke candy tin in a thrift shop and was thinking about using it for a resonator build

With the top snapped in place the tin has a very clear sharp ring to it when tapped
With the top off both the top and body just give off a dull thunk when tapped

Do I need to drill holes in the body (sound well)

I would hate to screw up the resonance on this thing on a whim

Yeah
I'm not sure I understood that either, and I'm pretty sure I know what I'm trying to say

The candy tin is kind of salad bowl/urn shaped. Not the typical flat sided tins

It is about 5 " in diameter with an almost flat top

I want to seal the top on the body and use the whole unit as the resonator and sound well

The top and body separately sound like carp but when sealed together have an almost bell like ring and I am afraid that drilling holes in the body will effect that tone and flatten the sound out like the two separate pieces

I am finishing one up now that uses a piezo in a SNUS can with no holes drilled in it as a pick up
The can does a good job of damping outside noise and sounds great amped, but doesn't do much for the sound when played acoustically

When trying to decipher this keep in mind
I have no idea what I'm talking about either
Yes
I already have the holes in the cigar box top
And they are actually 1'
I did good then

Hopefully I can afford to buy some tuners and fret wire for this thing in the next week or so

The one I made with the SNUS can I just could not bring myself to drill holes in the top of the box so I put 4 1/2 holes in the front side by the neck

With a good responding tin, you are muting it by not allowing the tone made to escape from the box. I would guess that putting 2 small (1") holes in the box top up by the neck will make a big difference in tone, clarity and volume.
Can you try it with out holes and than if it is not the sound you want put holes in the top later?
That was the plan for the body of the tin
But
I would never know for sure till I drilled the holes and that would drive me crazy

There will definitely be holes in the top of the box
I have never seen a resonator without them and could not imagine that that would sound right without them
