Hi Folks

Has anyone made their own cigar boxes?

I personally think it's ok to make your own box.

What is you opinions.

No rules... of course you can make your own box, lol.

A number of folks do it, especially in the UK, where, I understand, it's hard to get real cigar boxes.
I'm making my own for just that reason.
Make a nice custom box. Take your time and make it real pretty. Then go to tobaccy shop and buy a cigar and place inside of box . Then string up your box and take cigar out of CIGAR box and light up and enjoy playing. lol just kidding There aint no rules around here just take pride in your craftmanship. Have fun Steve
Sure you can build your own box. I do it when I feel like I'm getting too low on boxes and might not be able to fill my quota for that week.I sometimes build a few and set them aside just in case I run short.
To be able to keep up with sales I have to have between 6 and 12 a week for 1 stringers and at least 2 for 3 stringers each week.
I love this "no rules" stuff!
Where I live, is hard to get a cigar box at a reasonable cost, so I think it's a valid option. By coincidence, now I'm in my workshop cutting some pieces of cedar to make a "cigar box"...
I made my own for my first build because I didn't have a cigar box. It is one of my favorites and I will probably make some more.
Hi Tam
Whenever possible i like to use a real Cigar box , but my last build was home made because the eqiverlant box was $598 + shipping + Import Tax @ 22% = way too expensive hehe !
heres a link to the pics of it

Dont matter what box you use mate just look around on here you will see loads off non Cigar Box guitars you get , wine box , tool box , Gift box , metal Box ,and homemade box , better to make your own than wait forever trying to get the right Cigar Box , main thing is to get building
Hope this helps Bro
juju.
You are welcome to make your own box but, you will not be able to use this forum anymore....you'll have to start using the HMBG website next door ---> Home-Made Box Guitar Nation.
He's kidding lol
I like the whole 'found object' way of doing things, so that's why real cigar boxes are so cool, but I've made my own boxes too when I can't get one, or for doing resos where the boxes just aren't big enough to take a cone. The great thing is the whole freedom of making instruments this way..so do what you you want...and don't worry. If you check some of the conventional guitar builders sites, you'll see that people go to the trouble of making their own guitars, copy those classic designs we are all familiar with...and try to make it look exactly like a store bought model. One thing that always gets me on those builders sites is the "...I've been working on my latest build for the last 10 months..." sort of discussion..whereas on here it's more "...look what I made this weekend...".

CBGs are the extreme opposite of that...a cigar box guitar is a state of mind, not an instrument..and you can quote me on that! I think this site is proof of that approach, as there are plenty of posts of hacked and modded regular guitars, ukes, diddleybows, oilcan guitars etc..and it all seems to be welcomed in the whole alternative view that is the Cigar Box Nation.
I am just making a "cigar box" Hurdy Gurdy and ended up having to make the box myself as i could not get a deep enough box for the size wheel I wanted to use.
In Australia Cigar Boxers are hard to get, very little choice etc. I have been searching out old fashioned 35mm slide boxes as an alternative. They seem to work well and look nice.

Been off line for 9 days! Had to fight with my ISP to get on this evening. It looks though i won!
A box, is a box, is a box, is a box,,,, I have seen pizza box guitars, shoe box guitars, cookie tin guitars, no rules is the moto around here.
