ok that makes sense, to make a suitable hollow V, it'd have to be bigger, I wonder if the reverse V would work better.

That's quite alright, it is often best to start your own thread for new builds and seeking advice, but I don't mind anyone posting pics on my threads. tell me about your build, looks interesting.

Thank you,I will start a new thread in the mandolin section,but thanks for asking.

I have fancied a mandolin for a while,something tough to throw in the back of the campervan but also not too loud for playing in the evening.I was given a very nice piece of oak and after looking at a selection of plans decided to go for a solid body,I am working on how to cut the body work to mount a box behind  but for the moment I am concentrating on the shape and getting the neck cut.I suppose it is a bit of an exercise in woodworking as much as making a working mandolin but one thing is for sure,it will certainly take a few hits without breaking.will keep you posted

Hi again, it looks like you created a mandolin thread JP, ha ha. So if you don’t mind I would like to add a bit more info on the subject.
Kevin, here is a solid Mandolin body I built but dismantled many years ago, and when I get a moment spare, I’ll resurrect it. Very basic. Single coil guitar pickup with a bar instead of six pole pieces, so it picked up the strings better.

I don't mind Taff, some Mando tips would be helpful, I'm working on a 12 stringer, might help to know how to do 8 strings first.

Looking forward to watching this race. Mandolin is for some other day for me. I'm in the planning stage for my first lap steel. I have a nice piece of iroko. I know, it has lot's of mojo, I'll wear protection and will seal The Iroko Man in with some sort of sealant, yet to be selected...
