Hi !

I just finished my first CBG and when I put the strings on last night, I noticed a big mistake that I made first off!... My fret board is "flush" with the box!... I went to YouTube & watched a lot of videos & after watching some, I knew I made a mistake!

Now for a question:.. The strings get high at the 12th fret, and a little higher when they get closer to the box.

Can I put a block of wood "over the strings" and screw it down a little to bring the strings down some??... I seen something like that done on YouTube last night, but the block of wood was at the end close to the tuners.

Can someone please give me some advice on how to fix this?... My fretboard is glued to a walnut neck... I know I could probably take the fretboard off, then make a new one, but was hoping someone could help me solve the problem without taking the fretboard off.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

My apologies to Korrigan - Your typing is quicker than mine and I don't see your reply until I hit send resulting in me being a parrot or an echo :0)

No worries David. And I agree with you 100%... Diesel needs to build a number two.  : )

To prevent further NEW problems, it has been addressed in another thread, your tailpiece hinge might be reversed, notice how the strings pull on only the center of the hinge, which can cause it to not stay in tune as it's trying to unwrap the center of the hinge from the pin, reversing it will cause more of the box to take some of the string pull along with the 2 outside wraps pulling against the pin. Some may not have had this problem, some have, it's an easy fix, good preventive measure just in case.

here's the link to the other thread you can read up on, if it's not clear.

Thanks very much for all the replies!

The CBG sounds great now and it's easy to pick too!.. Being my first CBG I've learned a lot from this one lol.

I've wrote down some notes from this thread and yes, I'll be starting on another one very soon!.. This was the only box I had and I really didn't like it because I thought it would be too narrow for a CBG... I've located some boxes & plan to pick them up next week!

Here's a picture showing the whole guitar.

Thanks very much!!

That looks great Diesel! Well done and welcome aboard.  : )

Thanks Korrigan!.. I played it last night & really like the CBG!

When I start my second one, I'll start a new thread... Can't wait to get started lol. :)

I have really enjoyed the discussion regarding this.  I am new to building, but my finger/fret board is always flush with the box.  I like it that way as it allows me to place my pinky in a comfortable position for learning to finger pick.  I just don't know what the advantage is to having the finger board above the box surface?

Erasmo is correct. Look at any manufactured guitar. The fretboard is always higher than the neck. They have had this figured out for a couple hundred years. With a flush fretboard, the only way to lower the action is to reduce bridge height to next to nothing (which doesn't work very well) or increase the back angle of the neck. If you want to play notes by pushing the strings down with your fingers a low action is desirable.

Thanks for the replies!... Great info!

I'm getting ready for another build... lol

Also, if you are using magnetic pickups, you need to have space to adjust them up and down to find the tone you want. With a flush fretboard you may find that you have to lower the pickup below the level of the box to get to it's sweet spot, which could look a little strange.

Hi, also.......when the bridge is at a certain height, and there are preferred heights for diffferrent instruments, the top becomes "loaded" as there is more downward pressure from the strings on the top. The strings job is to activate the top into vibration, they do this better if the contact they make with the top , via the bridge, is substantial. Low saddle/bridge height (not action height) will greatly effect tone and output.

hope this helps. Taff

Hi again,I also meant to mention. There is a lot talk at times about the importance of "break angle" of the strings off of the back of the saddle. The degree of break angle has an effect on the amount of downward pressure exerted by the strings onto the top.

This can be explained if we look at the Gibson Les Paul solid body guitar. The neck is fitted at such angle the bridge has to be pretty high off the body at times, but the brake angle can be adjusted as the guitar has an height adjustable tailpiece. If this tailpiece is not adjusted correctly bridges have been known to collapse or bow under too much string pressure.

Any way enjoy your Christmas break. Cheers Taff
