If you use any of the 200 species of Rosewood in your guitars and shipor receive from outside of your country, read this!

New C.I.T.E.S. regulations come into effect January 2, 2017 that will make the export/import of any rosewood (all 200 species) and/or the import/export of any guitar/musical instrument that has ANY form or amount of that wood subject to requiring the seller/receiver to apply for, pay for, and prove said documents.

Horsecrap             how are they going to inforce that    get your fingerboards now and keep the receipt.

great post Scott .  re-export certificates are nothing new  for guitars etc   , they have tried it before ( if you have noticed  on most actual  guitar  cardboard boxes   "country  of origin "  with a blank  "  is usually  stamped on  it  .  this was supposed to  take care  of and  highlight exports  , re-imports  . re-exports  and  regions of concern  .  you would pay extra to  export  , but  not  to  import back   ,, and you would self flag regions of concern .  hardly anyone filled  in the blank  .  or if they  did  , they  lied    . and  it  just didnt work  . there is also  currently a ban / claim requirement  on  any  unfinished wood  .  again .  rarely  enforced .  this is yet another  attempt  to  "police with profit " . by taxing the  law abiders  willing to pay  instead of going after the actual bad guys that are not .  it will be hard as hell to enforce  and once they realize how hard it is and how much work is involved , it too  will  fade away  .  ironically  with the only  people getting  checked  and charged extra  , and   their  items delayed  being  the law abiding citizens that apply   for the form and pay and  fill it out  .  :-/

It does not apply to instruments shipped within the borders of your country or instruments carried for personal use while traveling internationally [unless they contain more than 22 lbs. (10 kg) of the regulated woods].

this is going to be a nightmare to police....

One of my favorite cameras (My Speed Graphic from 1943) is made from a species of Mahogany that no longer exists. It was harvested out of being c. 1950, which is why Graflex switched to a pressed resin and aluminum body structure. A few folks have stripped down their Speeds to wood, then finished them. Amazingly beautiful! And sobering. The Romans harvested out of existence the most desired spice of their era, sylphium. We don't know what it tasted like. So please, be sure you are in compliance. Or find a domestic wood that will work as well. What about ash or hickory?
