I'm building my first license plate guitar.  I'm making the neck now.  I have a 1x2 mahogany piece as the main neck with an ebony fret board.  I want the fret board to extend a few inches over the license plate.

It feels like a stupid question, but do I cut out a section of the license plate or lay the fret-board on lop of the license plate?

thanks,

Daniel

Bowing forward toward the fingerboard side won't cause buzz but can make intonation more complicated, but back-bow curving away from the fingerboard side will definitely cause fret buzz.

capo the first and last fret and ideally you should have a string-fret gap in the middle of   0.004"-0.012" depending on if you are a light picker or heavy strummer.  If you don't have a truss rod you can change to heavier tension strings to increase the relief, lighter tension strings to lessen the relief.

Good lookin' git.I haven't seen a cbg or LPG with a neck that long before. I reckon some are out there....I myself don't recall seeing them. Is that a Padron 7000 box? I have one in the line to use on my next LPG. I have always made my own "open faced" box for lpg's, but I want do something different (for me) next time. BTW, isn't your git a lefty?

JL:

Thanks I'll check out a capo get some heavier strings next time.

Yeah, I made the neck 2" too long in hindsight, but I wanted to use all that beautiful ebony I bought!  I made the body myself out of 1x3 mahogany and it is a righty (most people have told me I mounted the license plate upside down).
