Thanks Sammy! I first heard it done by the Smothers Brothers in the 60's or early 70's when they had a TV show over here. It was already an old folk song then and I wouldn't be surprised if it could be traced back to the UK as so many traditional American tunes can.

Yeah Derek. It's based on the Dennis Havlena "doodle bass" made from a large biscuit tin and played like an upright. Pictures and vid probably tomorrow.

Thanks Dani and Bear. This mando has a 14" scale and my next post, coming in a day or so, will be a bass with 41" scale. Maybe something in between after that!
