I did an LP kit similar to that last year. They slap a ton of sealer on them so when you stain you'll probably have to do multiple coats. On mine I stained the flamed maple with regular water based stain (not advised). Sanded back and re-stained to get the black flame/ tiger stripe deal and then coated the neck and back with like 5 or 6 coats of high gloss black lacquer aerosol over a few days. then clear coated the crap out of it, maybe 10 coats. Also it's real important to finish sand that thing, and be especially careful not to sand too much off the veneer because their super thin to begin with. I used this series for a reference:

I don't know how it sounds yet, it is still in the box. But I read some reviews and they all seemed like they favored the sound.
