Hi All, i am planing to make a resonator cover plate using a piece of copper sheet.

What do you recommand in case of thickness? Are 0,8 mm enough to make it robust on one hand and easy enough to form it?

Thanks in advance Rob

Hm, thanks for all the answers guys. Honestly, i am confused now ;-). Think i will go for 1 mm and simply follow the "learning by doing" rule.

That's what this is all about "learn by doing". It will all work out in the end. Go for it.......

covers ?  who  needs  em  ?

1928 national 666 tri cone resonator skull mod 3

;-)

Like that,Is that your build pick?

more  of a mod than a  build .  got the  28 national body  carcass   serial #666 off ebay ,, added a  make shift  neck  ,  and those skulls are   harley / rat  rod    light covers  ;-)

ill  sell  it  .  but  it aint  cheap  . ;-)

Any beating or striking of the copper will result in indentations of some sort,it will also 'move' the molecular structure, making areas alternatively thicker or thinner, with patience, and a lot of work, you can still get a good finish, but you will need a form to work it on to get a top finish, for a form,i'd suggest finding an old compressor tank end dome of the required shape, but once you've done that it might just be simpler to use the dome as a form for pressing the copper to shape using a hydraulic jack as a press,a little bit of work setting up a lightweight frame to use as a press will be far short of the time required to dress the copper to a good finish with malletts and slap bars

I will use a press anyway. Tried to shape a tincan lid with a hammer to a resonator. Poor result ..... Can work well with timber, but metall is a totally different story.

If you take the time and peen the bowl with a small bowl hammer uniformly,it not only looks great, but increases its rigidity enormously,i don't know how it would sound as an actual reso bowl though, but peened in that manner you could go down to very thin material and maintain good rigidity, which makes me think it might sound ok

So decission is done - i ordered 1 mm copper. Will see how stiff and resistant it finally will be. Thanks to all for the good tipps and advices.

If you are going to planish a copper bowl you ideally need a stake with a curved surface to support the bowl. When I did the guitar front shown earlier I used an old cobblers heel last

Thanks Michael, thats a great info. I saw once in India guys making brass wash pans by hammering. The stake they used was made of wood and covered with leather and i was wondering how they do to get the shape right done.

Your right - only bad thing is that we cant sit together, fool around and have a beer (or two, ..)
