Is there a box out there that is already the right size for making a license plate guitar? Or are they usually custom box or even solid body?

I always make my own. But if you find the perfect size, why not??

I figured custom box was the way to go....or solid body
Arturo Fuente makes a box that is big enough, but I always build my own... I have the same idea for a solid body- glue maple "wings" to a maple neck, and use a license plate as a cover....

I have used reclaimed tongue and groove flooring for the sides. The tongue side makes a nice lip to recess the plate a little bit.  I was able to find old gym flooring pieces which were super strong and stable with nice character, and they also make great necks.

oil based primer and oil based paint will give you the best 'chip resistance'

primer is sort of thinned out paint with glue mixed in. its job is to make the paint stick very well. Oil based paints are more durable than water based.

I use PPG acrylic enamel with a gloss hardner with great success. My grand kids havent been able to scratch or chip it and they aren't exactly gentle with it. Great shine and the hardner can be used in bulk Rustoleum.

It's actually shop line sold at the PPG dealer. A bit cheaper. Basic acrylic enamel and their high gloss enamel hardner. I add the same hardner to their clear enamel mixed with colored flakes for some extreme mcycle tanks and fenders I do from time to time. Lacquer tends to be brittle for me so all I use is enamel or poly paints. They flex with heat/cold changes.

2 old air brushes, 1 small and 1 medium gravity feed from Hfreight. They are more than adequate for any guitar work. I do have one each primer/paint from me car painting days. They only get used on my stuff. I do all my painting at my work bench or on an old table outside under an E-Z up awning.
Painting is the same as rattle can steady overlapping strokes caution around inside corners to avoid runns. Color will dicate number of coats. Red covers faster than silver metallic. I pre seal with a primer/sealer and water sand with 400 until im happy with the look of the primer no blemishes. That depends how fussy I'm feeling or the customer is demanding. Color coat is usually 4--5 coats with 5, 10, 15 minutes between coats. The hotter it is the quicker I recoat. Paint life with hardner is 4-6 hours here in summer, longer when cool. I cheat and put left over in the fridge as it all but stopps catylist effect of hardner. DON'T leave catylized paint in the gun over night unless you want a new paint gun. Hfreight guns are inexpensive so get a small one and experiment on leftover wood and boxes you may have goofed up. Endless possibilities!
