I thought a nut was still needed on a zero fret line? I am on my mobile and cannot view pictures. Does the 0 fret hold them with the aid of a bar?

There's a ukulele maker who uses a pin nut that allows you to use any gauge of strings:

I think it would take a little while to figure everything out, but might be very worth it in the long run. This design doesn't appear to use a zero fret, but you should be able to combine them or just use this design as is. I'm definitely going to try it out on my next build.

Wow randy I so want to hear the outcome, sounds rad. While on the subject of electrifying sound, I had an idea a while ago on te possibility of putting a piezo inside a glass/whatever slide.? Whaddya think? Would there be enough vibration coming though the slide to get some good grundge sounds out of? Might be better on a d-bow.

Colin, funny you should say that. I`ve been workin on that same idea for awhile now. I bought on of those ribbon piezo elements a while back the kind with the 1/8" plug on the end. I also got an input jack that the 1/8" plug fits into. My idea is to bury the piezo elememt in one of my bone slides and put a 3/8" brass rod epoxied on top of the element. Then make a wrist band from velcro with the input jack on it. Now this should work great as long as you have the slide against the strings, but for open playing I will have to also put on one of my bone piezo bridges. I`ll let you know how it works out!

I'm not sure I understand the problem here, I've changed string guage quite a few times on my store bought guitars with no dramas. What are the dramas people experience when doing this with CBGs, and why would they not behave the same as any other guitar nut?

there really is no drama just talk amongst enthusiast's. But, I.E. to replace a .045 gauge with a .025 there is enough of a difference in the size of the slot to compensate the sound of the new string. Or going to larger gauge, the same thing.

If it's a matter of lifting the strings at the nut for slide playing as some have suggested here then maybe something like this string lifter is the answer. Slots cut in the top of an aluminium (aluminum for you US folk) angle would do the same. John D

some things get a little over-scrutinized or talked-out, but really, it's all mental cheesecake until someone actually tries it and posts their results.

we all get our chance here to explore ideas and thoughts before we act them out, that's the beauty of this place.

i'd personally like to start a thread about building CBGs for morbidly obese handicapped left handed midgets with claw-hand deformity.

and maybe i'll do just that. colin, i'll mke you moderator. LOL

And no worries Randy your replies were pertinent to this conversation still. I was just exploring the possibilities of the idea in all forms and I know there are more talented/experienced builders here than me.

ha, one of my next 4 builds i am going to attempt a viola with a goat head/stock and hooves as the base.
