I have an imported 6 string guitar with the fretboard painted.  It is not the best quality instrument.  rc

Are you talking about the fret board? I typically use maple for my necks and glue a fret board of cherry, bubbinga, mahogony or whatever strikes me. That creates  a two tone look.

um, er, ref pic...the fingerboard in that pic is brown not black and the pic doesn't show the backside of the neck....

I'm going to throw a dart at the wall and guess you meant to ask about the headstock's face is black and the backside of the headstock is brown?  if so, see Wayfinder's notes above.

will try the masking, the outline of the white caught my eye, then black and who knows what the backside looks like

That white edge appears to be binding,reasonably simple to do in small areas,just look up guitar body binding on you tube
