I need to buy some booze, and I was wondering if any one had advice as to which bottle 'o hooch has the best neck for makin' into a slide? The only slide I've made so far is real narrow-- good enough or one or two strings only. I want/need a stubby slide that's wide enough for three or four strings. And yes, I WILL base my next alcohol purchase on the basis of whether or not the bottle's neck is good slide material, rather than what's inside the bottle! :)

I have only used Wine bottles for slides so far. I trounced all over a Makers Mark bottle and ended up with a pile of shards. A lot of good liquor bottles have too much going on in the neck to make a good slide. And i go thru plenty of wine in my house. Drinking and making stuff are 2 of my favorite hobbies. —B
I find a good Shiraz is the best choice...like the 2003 Yellowtail Premium. Of course, after such a delectable bottle, I usually find it wise to stay away from tools and glass...unless I want a trip to the ER!
Wine bottles for sure....most liquor bottles are either too thin or are all funky near the neck. (the only exception I can think of are higher end scotch bottles which are similar to wine bottles)
Check your local recycling center or look in the blue bins at the side of the road (if you're not too proud) for bottles. Get as many as you can: the success to failure ratio is pretty low.
I have a Boyd & Blair potato vodka bottle I've been eyeing up for just this purpose. Thanks for asking the question first, Isaac.
The neck on this bottle is fairly straight but the opening will only fit my pinky finger. The bottle was also wax dipped over the top so that will have to be removed prior to any cutting/breaking.

Plus it's a damn fine vodka.
Grey Goose Vodka and port wine bottles work well because the glass is thick. Imported glass from Italian wine bottles tends to be of superior quality too. Enjoy.
get a coricidin bottle....antiques stores about 10 bucks
Anything thick, with a straight neck.
Cut green glass slides have the most mojo, blue is second with the coricidin bottle being 3rd.

Thanks guys! Looks like I'll have to stock up on some wine! Oh darn! :)
Yep green or blue wine bottles..
Just thought I would throw this in. Once you got the bottle, you need to get the neck off of it. Here is a good video that shows how to get the neck off using a rotory tool with diamond cut off wheels. http://www.youtube.com/user/bigdaddysmojo#p/u/133/oNfyWl4N6Xs
THanks for that link! Great tutorial!
