Brendan deVallance replied to RTZGUITARS's discussion What's the best way to Straighten a solid wood Lid?
"My Cohiba is also arched, but i'm looking at it as a feature not a problem. The only issue I have is that the latch doesn't meet up properly with the body now and wont stay closed too well. Still trying to figure that one out. "

Brendan deVallance replied to David Bowes's discussion Bridge type and height
"I like the look of the metal hardware on CBGs, but i dont like the sound of a metal bridge. If you want a good acoustic sounding guitar, I would suggest a piece of wood."

Brendan deVallance replied to Paul Clair's discussion Long neck?
"nut to bridge, that is the measurement you need to heed. But im pretty sure you can make it how ever long you like. Fret calculators on line will give you the fret locations. The 12th is always have the distance. "

Brendan deVallance replied to Paul Lepper's discussion Tools
"I do it all with a table saw, drill press and bench sander, electronic tool speaking. But a band saw definitely would be a blessing in some situations. Im adapting to what I have and really have no room for a bandsaw. My shop is in the back yard."

Larry Chapman replied to Brendan deVallance's discussion Sound holes
"I really enjoy all the ideas and creativity shown on this website. But, I always seem to come back to how those original Delta blues men would have done it. I doubt Lightnin' Hopkins would have paid any attention to holes unless the box already…"

"Are you looking for scale length? Fret positions? stew macs lets you choose inches or mm on its fret calculator. http://www.stewmac.com/FretCalculator Also, looks like you made a Cigar Box Guitar already, not sure what a GBS is. Fo me, i just copy…"

"Matty Baratto this guy (who made sir Pauls guitar) has several on his profile page with center holes, not sure how he attaches the neck, must be braced around the edges or on the back perhaps."

Brendan deVallance replied to Brendan deVallance's discussion Sound holes
"Well the reason most dont put holes down the center is because that is where neck is. And so it might not look right/sound right. Although it was suggested on mine to cut out the 'o' in Cohiba which is not a bad idea, and would look cool.…"

Thomas Petry replied to Brendan deVallance's discussion Sound holes
"Rule #1, "there are no rules". You can put sound holes wherever you want. Different locations may sound different. Your results may vary. That's the fun of these things. Try it and find out. Many acoustic guitars have sound holes in…"

Stevie replied to Brendan deVallance's discussion Sound holes
"could you put 2 sound holes down the middle of the top of the box? like instead of one on each side. put the 2 sound holes down the middle where the COHIBA brand is? I want to do this with my current box but not sure if it doesn't work, because…"

Brendan deVallance replied to Pauly Bogdan's discussion Neck touching inside of box lid...yes or no?
"I'm not sure the space makes it sound better, but it makes me feel better. I have also had good results both ways. Dont get me started on the sound holes. —B"

Brendan deVallance replied to Berengario Tetaflor's discussion What about pine?
"I just dont think that is the optimum wood to use for a neck. Unless perhaps you added a truss rod. For all the work that goes into the guitar, id say invest in a better wood for the neck. A 1x2 oak piece at home depot is under $10.  "

Don Tucker replied to Brendan deVallance's discussion Sound holes
"I often put sound holes in last, after it's strung and I've played it without. I consider the holes to be mainly cosmetic as I've not noticed any real difference in sound after putting the holes in, but like Oily "Strat O Nine…"

Order99 replied to Brendan deVallance's discussion Sound holes
"I normally emplot 1/2" rivets near the top or bottom corners myself, but it isn't needed if you like the sound as is. There is an experiment you could try-loosen the strings enough to open the box just a touch-maybe 1/8" or less-shim…"

Clarky replied to Brendan deVallance's discussion Sound holes
"I sort of go inbetween, I like to make several small sound holes and fix little 'eyelets' into them to decorate the hole.  I'm not a fan of cutting huge holes in the box, but then everyone is different, there are no rules!"

hey brendan, i learned how to cut glass years ago the old fashioned way with a regular handheld glass cutter. i just score around the neck patiently then tap the bottle with a hammer. after it breaks off, i knock off any "bumps" with the ball of the glass cutter then sand down all the edges with some sand paper. 120 works really well, seems like silicone carbide paper is the best but anything works, i've used 220 auto paper before. let me know if you're interested in one. i've got like 20 bottles at home that my wife wants me to cut up and get rid of:)

Hey thanks, I appreciate it. I gave Shane some liner notes for my song but I guess not enough people gave him liner notes to mess with it.

Here are my notes:

Title: The Holly Bop
Artist: Skeesix

Description: The Holly and the Ivy meets the Blitzkrieg Bop, along with messing around with some of the presets on my Boss recorder. All guitar and bass sounds are played by me on my 3 string Hoyo de Monterrey box with a Skeesix Scorch and Twang pickup, straight into the Boss.
