Yep #2 is nearing completion fixed a lot of the mistakes I made on the first one and made a few new ones, the small gouge on the heel for example..  All in all a very much nicer instrument. I love the veneer on the headstock.  I am thinking about selling this one, just need to get the rest of the electrics in it, find hole covers, and oil the neck.. I like the larger box it rests in my lap better and the neck is way sweet, a huge improvement over my first!

it is a maple burl veneer.  I was given a small piece of it by a woodworker friend.  I have enough for one more tele style headstock so I'll stick with that for build 3.. I know the strings look wonky on the bridge, I was working on the bridge when I took the pic so they are actually straight.  LOL yeah it isn't a mistake... it's a feature!

Nice job! The joining of the heel and neck is really well done. Great blend of textures and woods. And I love the antler piece!

nice

;-)

Looks pretty dang nice to me

No worries about the heel/neck gouge...just say it was an angry beaver that bit into the tree while you and it were wrestling for possession.

Ok I got pics of it totally finished with the sound hole covers but I got to work and they were blurry so I'll try and get them tomorrow.  but I do have pics of my latest project, a friend said his son wanted to start playing banjo but he was wisely skeptical of his son's dedication, yet as any father he wants to support his desire.. soo I said what about a canjo?  He asked "what is a canjo?" and hence the latest project for the young man's birthday next month.....

cut the frets for the diatonic scale and did it myself with all the good coaching I found here, but I didn't make sure the table was leveled.  (Know your tools Keith) so the frets are just a tad diagonal.  Thought great I gotta throw it away!  then I remembered that this is a one string instrument and that the diagonal frets don't matter so I just moved the scale just a bit so where the string crosses the fret is correct and we get a stylized feature instead of a failure!!  snatched victory from the jaws of defeat... so ends the first chunk of wood purchased to make cbg's, two gits and a canjo!

You were talking about the good feel of the size of the box on that guitar with the maple burl veneer. What size is the box? Im trying to determine what mine should be as I'm going to build my own. Love your projects!

I have measured it before but I don't remember I'll measure it tonight and post tomorrow but I want to say it is 8X9X1 3/4  I'll confirm that though.  And thanks I has been fun and educational..

it is 8x9 1/2x 1 1/2 and being a traditional guitar player the larger box just feels better. It is definitely louder and the resonance lets you hear some way undeserved sustain. It is reall more than I ever expected.
Of that I have no doubt, I will use some of the smaller boxes on future builds, I was only speaking to feel and as a player the larger flatter boxes feel better to someone more familiar with a traditional guitar in their hands.

Would you elaborate on the what you mean by a box being too big and losing the characteristics?

I'm determining the size of my box right now. It'll be 1/8" mahogany or maybe 1/4" bubinga sides and 1/8" mahogany top and back, which I'm thinking might give me more stability.

That will be nice to see!
