So I'm building a lunchbox fretless 3-stringer for my niece for Christmas. Build is essentially done, except, for installing the tuners and stringing it up. Evidently I notched too shallow for the headstock and the tuners won't tighten. Is there a way of fixing this without having to redo the entire neck/head? Any recommendations would be helpful.
Thanks in advance!

I am guessing you are using tuners that have the sleeve with the threads on it.

If so, you can use washers to shim the shaft up so the sleeves tighten all the way. If you don't like the color of the washers, you can always paint them black, or gold, or whatever color suits your fancy.

Dan's right. Also, you could add a thin 1/8" piece of wood (even a section of a top or back of a cigar box shaped to match the headstock shape) to the back of your headstock to make it a bit thicker, without showing on the front.

Here's what I did with the thin pcs inside box but you could do Scott said and us the box 1/8 wood.

if you're using closed tuners the threaded barrel sleeves can be shortened, just cut 5mm off and clean up the end of the thread, works for me :-)

theres a zillion ways to shim em up.  just go for it

I had the same problem building mine today. Headstock too thin, couldn't tight the tuners. I used some washers that I had laying around the house, but in one I had to use a nut. I didn't finish though, maybe I'll change the nut and put some washers too.
