We are pleased to announce the

2013 Cigar Box Guitar Builders Challenge!

The contest begins immediately. The deadline for submissions is midnight, December 31, 2013.

A winner will be announced the first part of January, 2014.

This year the theme will be:

Steampunk

From Urban Dictionary: Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. It could be described by the slogan "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner." It includes fiction with science fiction, fantasy or horror themes.

Contest Rules:

  • One submission per person.
  • Each submission shall be an instrument of the builder's own construction and overall design.
  • The instrument shall prominently and visibly feature a cigar box in the design.
  • Each builder will submit up to five pictures of their creation. No videos please till after the judging is complete.
  • Entries must be submitted no later than midnight December 31, 2013.
  • Builders shall post the pictures of their instruments in the separate "Contest Submission Thread."
  • Builders should include descriptions of their work, including any technical details such as features, materials used, or any other information they feel would assist the judges in reviewing the submission.

Once the submission period ends, all comments in the submission thread from other CBN members will be deleted to make it easier for the judges to review the entries. The judges will review the pictures and select a winner.

The decision of the judges is final.

We will notify everyone of who the judges will be once we get that list finalized. We try to have 3-5 judges on the panel.

Do NOT post your entries or pictures in this thread!

There will be a separate thread for submissions so we can keep all the entries in one place.

You can post your entries HERE!

Good luck and have fun!!

Count me in, started it over the weekend.

This seems like a nice site with some nice people! :)

A friend of mine put a link to this on my facebook page, about a month ago. I envisioned a steampunk idea right away for a Cigar Box that I found back in June. Since then I have been trying collect the pieces that I need for it.

So count me in...... if I can make the neck, and throw it all together in time...... :P

I just noticed I failed to announce who our judges will be. So, without further ado:

The Judges

JP Soars

JP Soars is an accomplished, award winning blues guitarist. JP along with his band, the Red Hots, has won the International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee, as well as the Albert King award for most promising guitarist. His most recent album, More Bees With Honey was named the 2nd coolest CD of the year by Little Steven and his Underground Garage on XM Radio, and was in the top 5 click to pick on BB King's Bluesville on XM also. On stage, JP plays a 2 string slide CBG he made himself.

Tony Steidler-Dennison

Tony Steidler-Dennison returns again this year to help us judge. Tony is the creator and host of the free, long running Roadhouse Podcast. Tony has completed over 400 one hour shows of the Finest Blues You've Never Heard, and is a veritable encyclopedia of the blues.

Justin Johnson

Justin "The Wizard" Johnson is certainly no stranger to cigar box instruments. His collection of roots instruments grows on almost a daily basis. He, along with his partner Nikki, have been traveling the world, bringing his virtuosity and roots music to fans everywhere. He has begun work on his much anticipated double album Smoke & Mirrors. You can read more about it on his web site.

Who selected the finals for the 2013 steam punck cigar box contest? Keith Alan and King HArvest entries were not made from cigar boxes! They even admitted  it!   Adam Kovark said his was made form a cigar box insert! Not  a prominent cigar box! Look at his pictures it looks like just a metal construction glued to a cigar box insert at the last minute. Is Micheal Bennyworth guitar really a guitar? Where is the cigar box??? King Harvest box is a Michaels craft store book box.

Keith alan said  “this is not a Cigar Box... Yes I know it is against the rules but it appears I may not be the only one so I figured what the hey.”   King harvest said  “I can only humbly present an old creation of mine that, quite unfortunately, is considered to be hors consours do to its non cigarish nature.”

PLAY BY THE RULES PEOPLE!!!

Contest Rules:

§  The instrument shall prominently and visibly feature a cigar box in the design.

Marc,

Yes, you are correct. Those entries did not conform to the published contest rules, and are, hence, ineligible for the swag under those rules. I'm pretty sure the guys submitting knew that, but wanted to show off their builds anyway, as being thematically correct. I'm also sure that the judges are competent enough to read the rules, understand them and apply them fairly and correctly. Give them some credit for knowing what they are doing. Admire the ingenuity of those who know they don't have a snowball's chance in Hell of winning this gig. They are still some impressive looking gits.

And if we wanted to get all lawyerish, the rules can easily be interpreted thusly: The instrument shall prominently and visibly feature a cigar box in the design. Taken one way, that means a PICTURE of a cigar box plastered on the front of any old resonating chamber could conceivably conform to the rules. Taken another way, it means that a CB shall be present in the DESIGN (it doesn't actually and unequivocally state that a cigar box shall be prominently and visibly be featured in the END RESULT!). Most reasonable people, but not all, would understand that a cigar box should be part of the instrument. But that is definitely NOT what the words actually SAY.

And the judges are sharp enough to figure all that out. Trust in them to do their job. Make up a song called "It Depends (What The Definition Of The Word 'Is' Is)." Sing it in a Clintonesque drawl. It might be Hillary-ous ;-).

then again  ..... look at   last  years  contest .

lol

Ahh, but that was last year. Things were different then. For example, I was a year younger. I had fewer CBGs in my man cave. I had a beard. Yep, things were easier in the old days...

;-)

The cigar box is the trapezoidal shape that houses the wheel. Have the lid for confirmation if needed. The rules say instrument not guitar and the hurdy-gurdy is a Victorian instrument.

It's for fun, and a prize is a bonus. I sense a bit of post holiday grumpiness here.

Hi Marc,
i am sorry you got it the wrong way. I had not the slightest intention to fool around the judges, nor anyone else.
I stated clearly (or maybe not clearly enough) that i have no expectations at all on this contest since my build is NOT a CBG, therefore there is no possible way i can really satisfy the minimum requirements.

I just wanted to do what everyone on the Nation is about: show off and have fun!

Again, i have the utmost respect for this community and i apologize if i did not play by the rules but at least i did not post a comment under a brand new profile created just to not be permanent (with a NON CBG photo as profile image..).

That said i wish you good luck on the challenge and an happy new year

P.S. As a matter of fact my build is out of a real book of Jules Verne and is a spare copy i had in my library.
No other book will be harmed during the making of a guitar. I promise.
