Depends on the "break angle" of strings behind the nut. If it is enough - it doesn't matter on which side you'll start. If the angle is too flat - better start from the top.

If the level of the top of the head stock is atleast 5/16 below the fretboard, you're good either way.  If you're using a scarf joint to attach the headstock to the neck, you're good either way.  Short of a "flat" headstock vis-a-vis the fretboard, it's really a matter of astetics.

Hi Tinker, I tend to favour taking it from the top but not leaning back, just a curve and then straight like the strat necks. The latest build I have laminated as it's a six string and it's well up to the job so all I had to do on the top layer of laminations was step it down the neck, add a couple of shaped side laminations to the bottom layer and job done. Gives a real nice look if you use different coloured woods for the laminations once it is polished. All the best mate, Chris. :)
