I have successfully replaced the tuning pegs on my CBG from uke pegs to machine tuners. But I am now having trouble with the nut. I love the look of the standard issue bolt as a nut, but it really isnt working for me. It wont hold the stings in the right place, I guess the grooves of the bolt aren't deep enough. I think I am going to replace it with just an oak wood nut. Any advice on this subject would be appreciated.

Shane Speal and others used screws to hold their strings in place. Go to shanes page and look in his pictures and you will see what I am saying.
String size is to big, or the bolt thread (not grooves) are to fine, and tuners need to be lowered below nut level.
One thing which might help would be to add a fingerboard, and put the nut on top -- that should give you more angle down to the tuners.
I went to home depot and asked for some samples of corion and they gave me enough to make about 20 or 30 nuts or bridge pieces,he,he,he.These work very well and do not buzz at all.You just take a three corner file and make the slot for your strings.Works great.I have had to add a little screw on the head to guide the string.Looks ok if you use the right screw,I used brass.
Thanks for all these tips, very helpful. I love the way you really have to get your hands dirty to find out all the details on how to do this. I swear my second one is gonna be a masterpiece . . . . —B
My fav tool of choice is the x-acto knife (I've been in the graphic arts for years). And that is what I used to cut the grooves in the nut for the string. Used it like a small chisel I guess.

Although a 3 corner file will work, it does not provide the best slot for the string, it should be rounded on the bottom to cradle the string. I start my slots with an exacto saw and finish with a torch tip cleaner - leaves a nice round slot.

I have found the best way is to get the strings that are to be used and use them like floss and the groove generated by holding the string in the groove and pulling it out makes the fit perfect...how lazy is that!! there is a reference to it on the stewmac site actually called floss. Still want the proper nut files tho....
