Hi All,
I noticed I didn't see a general discussion or question category so I decided to post here.
Basically, I am in the market to purchase my first CBG. And upon doing some surfing I realize there is a TON of options to choose from. Im leaning toward a 3 stringer. The part Im getting a bit confused on is the tone. My first audio impression of a CBG was on the Red Dog Guitars sight. He had a video of him playing a 3 string that sounded so haunting and infectious that is what initially got me hooked on wanting a CBG. However I also LOVE the dirty gritty sound. So I'm trying to figure out what gets me the sounds I want. Single coil, or pizio? Also if anyone can recommend a certain builder or type I should be looking into. Yea, I know this is the build thread section, but I just figured it was my best option. Any bit will help. Thanks a ton
Adam

I just added a few videos to the ones I currently have for sale, so you can see if they have the sound you are looking for.
Dan
I would suggest talking to Ted Crocker over on Ted Crocker he designs pickups and cbg's an awesome man in respects to these great instruments. I have purchased a couple of his pickups and right now he is building me a custom wound three under pick up for that gritty sound. He also has some really good builds check him out
Very well said Brother
I faced the same problem (nice problem though!) a couple of years back. As the guys suggest, listen to the experts and if possible get your hands on one to try before you buy. I opted for a fretless 3 string, magnetic pickup, from Roosterman Guitars in Scotland. I didn't go for a piezo (even though they were a lot cheaper) because they really are - in my opinion - the most basic of pickups. I wanted something half decent that I could put through an amp and muck about the sounds/tones and know that the pickup was man enough to take it. I've used piezos since then in diddly-bows, stomp boxes, washboards etc but will always go for wound magnetics with volume controls at least for my guitars. To be honest fella, if you can't find what you're looking for on here you ain't gonna find it anywhere!!
Let us know what you go for.
All the best and good hunting!
Haha you probably are right , I am probably a chicken in the fox house here. The frustrating part is the HUGE inability to play one first before purchase. After all, it's that sometimes instant bond with the instrument that leads us to choose it. All the info has been super helpful. Im trying to watch as much videos as I can and compare sound, to the certain pick up being used. I want great tone, but still want the authentic sound of "back porch delta blues". Sounding good is one thing, but TOO clean of a sound, to me kinda defeats the purpose of why CBG's have such an allure. It's a sound all it's own. I'll keep looking around, and believe me, any input is greatly appreciated.
good point about Tone Adam - if you buy a $5000 Strat you want it to sound exactly like all the other Strats, but a back porch CBG made in someone's shed for a few pounds will sound unique and have a superb tone all of its own...dirty is good! (-:
Tony,
Building one seems to be the general opinion I keep getting but I am FAR from being handy. Maybe at some point I would consider it, and trust me I would build one if I was comfortable in my handy work, but it's definitely not my forte. It would be the solution to my problems, but sadly I don't think it'd be my safest bet
go for it adam ,try the box and a stick approach ,i'll wont cost much and you may suprise yourself.....
Darren Brown (D.B. Customs), Keith Alan, Smokestack Guitars. All three are great, and on this sight.
Just try to stay out of quadrants III and IV. Anyone can make one for quadrant III so you're better off spending the few bucks on materials and maybe, possibly, not liking the outcome. E-bay is largely the land of IV. There are lots of people here that build and play great guitars that are a great value at all price points. I'm not one of 'em. Be patient and find a guitar or builder that speaks to the player inside you. Have fun!
