If you could only have one, which would it be?

I'm more concerned with cutting my own neck stock to size than the actual CBG build but the notching of my necks, headstocks and such would be a nice change from the hand saw/chizzle method I use now.

Just been shopping around and was curious what other more expearienced folks might think.

Any thoughts or guidance would be appreciated.

Yep..bandsaw, bandsaw, I have two 14", ones a delta, 1939...cast iron base, smooth n quiet, other a chinese copy, couldn't pass it up at 50bucks, also runs smooth n quiet...gonna add a 6" riser kit to the delta...

Mines about 50 years old cast iron, bulletproof.. Got it off eBay for $110..
I like big heavy old tools much better than the lightweight Chinese stuff u get today..

Tell you what I did, get on eBay and do a search for bandsaw, limit the search to say 50 miles from home and less than $100 then save the search so you get an email when one turns up. Do it for drill press and table saw too and before you know it you'll be set right up

I have a 14 inch Rigid  Bandsaw with a resaw fence on it I love it. I bought it when I was building traditional bows for people to rip out small laminates

The big deal about bandsaws is that you'll use them for lots of stuff that you might not have thought about in the first place. Notching a neckstick to fit inside the box?...3 cuts on the bandsaw, job done accurately, neatly and quickly..literally a minute's work... shaping heels, doing Fender style headstocks..you'll do more and do it quicker and more accurately than with any other tool.

Again, thanks for your replies.

Phrygian, did what you suggested. About 50 miles away, a Delta. Toad Mentioned the same brand but obviouisly it's a newer one. http://annapolis.craigslist.org/tls/2886086946.html .

For serious work that's way too small in my opinion...1/4 HP looks really underpowered for cutting thick hardwood stock...you want 3/4 - 1 HP motor and 10"- 12" throat.

I bought a used 12" Record and thought it was quite a lot more machine than I needed...but it's been worth every penny and I can't recommend buying anything smaller.  It's big and heavy, but it's got a proper cast iron table and a decent rigid fence. That little bench-top thing will probably be OK for small jobs, but with a proper saw you can rip 3" thick hardwood for making fretboards, cut solid guitar bodies and do all the cuts you need for making necks quickly and effortlessly.

wait and watch mr hound, save that search and get the email notifications and youll find they come up all the time

what you want imho is a BIG OLD ONE.  someones grandpa dies, they sell all the old stuff off.  Happens all the time mate.  dont go over a hundred bucks

I agree with Dan Sleep, you could sell his table saw and I wouldn't miss it. I would, however, miss his band saw! (Thanks Dan)

Both are great tools, and you can adjust your design ideas to work with the tools you have. If all I had was a good table saw my CBG's might look a little different, but I'm sure I could get them done just as well.

Band saw, hands down....You're all gonna hate me.. 10" craftsman like new at a garage sale.. $20.00 Love it BUT be warned the blade does bend a bit and often doesn't make a flat cut do to the blade bending... Of course it's 2 inch oak.. and I'm still learning about band saws...

that one is too small for anything but the smallest jobs.  I also got a little one like this i use it for bone and little jobs like that, its handy but its not really a bandsaw in the sense of what one might need to make guitars.   Your blade is bending cos youre pushing too hard, slow down when turning corners with a bandsaw..

you still need a decent one im afraid, but that little one will always be handy for saddles and nuts and little jobs like that

Hey Hip, something like this.

Talked to a friend earlier today who's in the woodworking field.. He's checking the underworld of the area to see if there's anything sitting close. He did pick a few craiglist adds that in his opinion were great deals or at least worth checking into if there's nothing in the area.

He gave me the "buy something real, not some harry homeowner saw" speech as well.

Again, many thanks for the reponses.
